Alchi Gompa (Alchi Monastery/Alchi Choskhor) is an old unique Buddhist monastery complex located in Alchi Village in western part of Leh. Administered by Lirik Monastery, it has its history dating back to more than 1000 years. Built on a flat ground, it is a favourite halt point for several Leh-Ladakh travellers. The complex was created by Richen Zangpo, in the 11th century, who was the Mahaguru and decoder of the Sanskrit manuscripts into Tibetan. The monastery houses several Buddhist temples, chortens, inscriptions and wall paintings. Sum Tsek and Alchi Du Khang are two main temples in the complex. Another celebrated temple, Rinchen Lhakhang, dates back to 1000 AD and covers the largest area.

Surrounded by Apricot trees, Alchi monastery is a treat for the eyes of all visitors. The ancient wall paintings and the murals at Alchi showcase the most spiritual and exclusive Tibetan art reflecting the sacred particulars of Buddhists and Hindu kings of that era in Kashmir. The main entrance to the temples is through wooden doors which are marvellously carved and relate to European architecture.

During your visit to Alchi Gompa, interesting adventure activities include mountain biking, camping, monastery touring. You can also enjoy the magnificent mountain views or try rafting between Leh and the assembly of Indus and Zanskar Rivers.
