The holy cave where Lord Shiva preached the secrets of immortality to his consort Goddess Parvati, Amarnath is one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimage sites. Located about 4,000 m. above sea level, the cave is accessible by thrilling trekking routes from Chandanwari (about 30 km. long) and Baltal (about 14 km. long) passing through mesmerizing snow-covered peaks and valleys.

Every year, an ice stalagmite in the form of Shiva Lingam formed inside the cave for a short time period during summers is worshipped by the devout pilgrims. Many religiously significant places like Pahalgam, Chandanwari, Lake Sheshnag and Panjtarni can be visited on the route to the holy cave. Camps, tents and food are available at various places of halt. Trek can be covered on foot or on ponies.

Warnings:
Children below 13 and adults above 75 are not permitted. Registration for the pilgrimage is a must. Physical fitness certificate is a must. Pilgrimage involves extremely strenuous trekking under rough weather conditions. Don’t forget to carry heavy woollens, trekking shoes, torch, raingear, eatables, bottled water and dry fruits.
