World’s only floating national park, Keibul Lamjao National Park is an absolute wonder of nature. Spread over an area of about 40 sq. km., the park consists of floating masses of vegetation called phumdis over Lake Loktak. Brow-antlered deer, better known as Eld’s deer, locally as sangai and fondly as dancing deer, is the flagship specie of the park and also the state animal of Manipur. The park was declared a national park in 1977 with the main intention to protect and preserve the near-extinct deer.

The park also accommodates other interesting wild species like hog deer, large Indian civet, wild boar, golden cat, common otter, flying fox, musk shrew and many types of fishes and reptiles. Avifauna here consists of hill myna, kingfishers, drongo, wagtail, hooded cranes, white-breasted waterhen and black kite among others. Aquatic flora of diverse varieties adds another dimension to the park’s beauty.

Foreign tourists must obtain Restricted Area Pass (available at major metropolitans) to access Manipur and the park. The domestic tourists must also obtain Inner Line Permit for the trip.
