Named after an ancient temple, Nandur Madhyameshwar Bird Sanctuary has recently earned acclaim as an important bird area. The sanctuary which resulted from the construction of a dam on River Godavari spreads over a vast protected area of about 10,012 hectare. Over the course of time, multiple lakes and shallow water ponds formed in the region led to the perfect habitats for numerous species of native and migratory birds.

Among the top species of residential birds found here are black ibis, egrets, herons, vultures, partridges, teals, sandpipe, storks, kites, buzzards, spotbills and many more. The commonly spotted migratory birds at the sanctuary include spoonbills, pintails, pochardds, goode brahminy duck, curlews, flamingo, godwits and many others.

The sanctuary also features a huge variety of flora, including trees like mango, jamun, tamarind, neem, maharukh and babul and many aquatic plants as well. Visitors may also encounter the presence of animals like tigers, leopard, panther, bear, bison, blue bull, palm civet and mongoose. Boating is also possible at one of the lakes in the sanctuary. There are many ancient temples in the close vicinity.
