Situated 4,310 m. above the sea level, Nathu La is a mountain pass which connects the Indian state of Sikkim with China’s autonomous region of Tibet. Boasting of heart-warming natural splendour, the site has gained immense popularity among the tourists of all sorts. The place dons the glittering cover of snow during winters and in summers; it flaunts distinguished magnificence due to the growth of grasses, rhododendrons, junipers and other varieties of vegetations. The pass, which belonged to the Old Silk Route in the past, is now an important trade and pilgrimage route.

The region also provides home to the endangered Himalayan species like snow leopard, Tibetan wolf, Tibetan gazelle, raven and many more. It is also a paradise for the bird-watchers, who get to explore the likes of laughing thrushes, wrens, tit-babblers, warblers, eagles, pheasants, redstarts and forktails. Located close to the pass are many mesmerizing lakes, the most popular one being Tsongmo. Indian War Memorial and the Chinese check post that can be viewed from a distance are other attractions.

No foreign tourists are allowed to visit the pass. Indian tourists need to avail the permit for which they must apply a day in advance. Only limited vehicles are allowed to the pass each day. The road to Nathu La is prone to heavy snowfall during winters and landslides throughout the year.
