Carved in the basalt rocks of Western Ghats’ Satamala Range of Hills, Pitalkhora Caves have their history dating back to the 3rd century BC. Counted among the specimen of the earliest Buddhist sites, the caves were discovered by the British in the 19th century. Representing exquisite rock-cut architecture, the cluster consists of 14 Buddhist caves out of which, 4 represent chaityas (prayer halls) and 10 representing viharas (monasteries). The stupas at the chaityas are considered among the best across the country.

Among the most amazing highlights of the place are the enthralling paintings and inscriptions on the pillars. The statues and sculptures of nagas (snakes), door guardians and animals like elephants and horses are exceptionally remarkable. Miniature windows and sculptures of yakshas enhance the visual treat. A notable aspect of many caves is the drainage system which was constructed to prevent water from seeping inside.

The hike to the caves in itself is an outstanding experience. The caves overlook the ravines and gorges and have beautiful waterfalls all around. Avoid visiting the site during monsoons when the entire surface becomes slippery.
