Designated as the Tirth-Raj (the king of pilgrimages) and Adi-Tirth (the original sacred pilgrimage) in the Hindu religion, Pushkar Lake is also counted among the holiest five lakes in the Hindu mythology. Resting amidst the rugged Aravalli Hills, the lake is well-known for its holy ghats (platforms built near the lake banks) and Hindu Temples, the most prominent one dedicated to Lord Brahma. In fact, it is the only Brahma Temple in the world.

It is believed that the lake was created when the lotus flower (pushpa) fell from Brahma’s hand (kar). More than 500 temples dedicated to different Hindu deities occupy the periphery of the lake. Among the 52 ghats, each known for a specific reason, the most popular ones are Varaha, Dadhich, Kota, Gau, Yag, Karni, Gangaur and Saptarishi.

It is firmly believed that a holy dip in the lake can wash off one’s sins and sorrows. The water is also believed to heal skin problems and some other ailments. The lake hosts the annual Pushkar Fair, one of the biggest religious gatherings for the Hindus. Circumambulation of the lake is also considered auspicious.
