An ambitious initiative by the Government of Gujarat, Gujarat Science City is designedto educate students and adults towards science and innovation in the land of Gandhi. With the use of entertainment tools, Science City organizes creative yet engaging programs to make science simple and interesting. Spread over 107 hectares, the center showcases an Energy Education Park, Electrodome, Thrill Rides, IMAX 3D theater, Hall of Science, Life Science Park, an Amphitheatre and Musical Dancing Fountain etc. Creating massive recreational opportunities to the tourists with itsentertaining yet educational tools, the Life Science Park of the center houses large varieties of butterflies and rare cacti plants. Enamouring tourists with its eye-popping fountain, the musical fountain show starts at 6:30 p.m. and generally ends at 8:40 p.m. For a thrilling 3D theater experience, tourist can step into the area at 2:30 p.m. The last theater show is at 7:30 p.m.
Dedicated to Lord Krishna and his scripture Gita, the holiest book of Hinduism, Gita Mandir is a quaint and beautifully decorated temple. Located away from the hustle and bustle of Mathura’s main centre, the temple is well-known for Gita Stambh, 18 marble pillars on which the whole of Gita’s verses have been carved. Constructed by the corporate giant Birlas, the temple has some beautiful carvings and paintings to its credit. Inside the temple are the beautiful idols of Lord Krishna, Lord Vishnu, Lord Rama, Goddess Sita and Goddess Lakshmi. The temple is elaborately decorated on the festive occasions like Holi and Janmashthmi. Tourists visiting the holy Mathur Town make it a point to offer prayers at the temple. A number of shops selling items of worship and sweets are located outside the temple.
One of the prime religious places in Ahmedabad, Ahmed Shah Mosque gets its name from the city’s founder. Built way back in the year 1414, the mosque is well-known for its architectural design which consists of ornamental grills and intricate details. The use of white and black marbles in the prayer halls (called Mehrabs) adds to the beauty of this structure. Another highlight of the mosque is the worship chamber meant for women called Zenana. Huge stone pillars, brackets and beams are the elements of the Gujarat school of architecture. These are the evidence for the belief that the mosque stands on an ancient Hindu Temple. The beautiful garden surrounding the mosque lends charm to the site. In the series of worldwide ISKCON Temples, the one at Ahmedabad boasts of splendid architecture, resulting from the blend of Gujarati and Rajasthani styles. Dedicated to Lord Krishna (or Govindha) and his beloved Radha, the temple is also known as Sri Sri Radha Govindha Dham. The white marble structure has beautiful gigantic domes that bear hand-carved depictions of Krishna’s life. In the interior, there are entrancing idols of Radha-Krishna, Rama-Sita-Lakshmana and Hanuman, Gaura-Nitai, Jagannath-Baldev-Subhadraji and many more. The huge prayer hall can accommodate thousands of devotees at a time and is elaborately designed with marble floors, embellished ceilings, intricately designed windows and ornamented pillars. Hymns, Bhajans and sacred chanting throughout the day add mysticism to the whole complex. The temple is famous for its tasty prasada which is also distributed at a large scale to the poor and hungry. Special celebrations take place on the occasion of Janamashthmi and during popular events like Krishna Fetsival, Gita Marathon and Govardhan Puja.
Dedicated to the 15th Jain Tirthankara, Dharmanatha, Hutheesing Jain Temple is a stunning piece of architecture with exquisiteness written all over. The construction of the temple was started by a rich trader Hutheesingh and was completed by his wife in 1848 after his sudden demise. It is believed that the total cost of construction was over a million dollars. Apart from the principal shrine, there are 52 shrines dedicated to different Jain Tirthankaras. Clean and beautiful courtyards, ornamentally carved pillars and mesmerizing dome supported by 12 beautiful pillars are the outstanding features of the temple. Another notable attraction of the temple complex is the 78 ft. high Mahaveera Stambha (also called Manastambha or the Column of Honour) with extremely charming design. Photography is prohibited inside the temple’s shrines, but you can definitely capture the marvellous exteriors.
Also known as the Regional Community Science Centre, this modern science facility is a one-of-its-kind attraction in the whole region of Gujarat. With an objective to teach practical science and to overcome the prevalent superstitions and dull classroom studying, the science centre offers workshops, seminars and live projects to help students gain better understanding of various science fields. Among the key highlights of the centre is the Aryabhatt Science Museum with nearly 100 live projects on display for the visitors. In addition, there are well-equipped laboratories for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Electronics in the premises. There are two auditoriums, a 200 seat well-equipped auditorium with multimedia support and a 500 seat open air auditorium. A sky watching tower and a library with collections of thousands of books and periodicals are among other sections. Some of the popular workshops organized at the centre include Science Can Be Fun, Fun with Electronics, Model Rocket making and Technology Tour. Students from different schools are enrolled into different programmes and workshops where they can experiment of their own.
Even after more than 560 years of its construction, Lake Kankaria continues to enjoy huge popularity among the visitors. Sultan Kutubuddin got it constructed in 1451 for royal bathing and today, it has an exceedingly entertaining lakefront catering to all age groups. The lake appears circular in shape, but is actually a 34-side polygon with a splendid island in the middle. Nagina Wadi (meaning ‘beautiful garden’) with a royal palace and a musical fountain enhance the glory of this island. The lakefront is visited by hundreds every day to enjoy at Kankaria Zoo (housing tigers, lions, anaconda, elephants, albinos, numerous birds and some rare species), Bal Vatika (housing boat house, toy house, mirror house, planetarium, butterfly display) and Kids City (with outstanding activity centres). Two toy trains (called Atal Express and Swarnim Jayanti Express) are other favourites among the visitors. Balloon safari, joy rides (vertical swing, black flash, sky fly and many others), National History Museum, aquarium, desert safari, Dutch tombs and other attractions add to the tourism value of the lake. The upcoming Stone Mural Park (with pink sandstone sculptures depicting region folklore) is considered as the next big thing in the whole Ahmedabad. Additional prices must be paid for enjoying various attractions and rides. The lake is beautifully lit up at the evening, offering exclusive visual treat to the eyes.
Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum is an art and archaeology museum that has a rich collection of ancient Indian art forms. It is especially noted for being a treasure trove of palm-leaf manuscripts, ancient sculptures dating back to the 3rd-11th century and miniature paintings from the Pre-Mughal era. One of the finest museums in Ahmedabad, the museum forms part of the LD Institute of Indology and was originally set up by Muni Shri Punyavijayji, a monk and Sheth Kasturbhai Lalbhai, a famous industrialist of Ahmedabad. Some of the collections include carvings in various media including stone, marble, bronze and wood, Jain manuscripts numbering over 75,000 Jain manuscripts and many rare artefacts. A 6th century AD sandstone carving of Lord Rama from Madhya Pradesh, which is believed to be the oldest-known carved image of Lord Rama is one of the most treasured pieces. At present the artefacts are displayed in a new museum building designed by the internationally acclaimed architect Shri Balkrishnabhai Doshi. The museum was opened top the public in the year 1984.
One of the finest textile museums in the world, Calico Museum of Textiles exhibit what is considered as India’s national heritage. Founded way back in 1949, the museum promises some great opportunities to explore the centuries old textile arts, embroideries and printing techniques. Apart from the specimen of Indian textiles influenced by the Mughals and other dynasties, there are collections displaying India’s textile trade with many other countries. Techniques like tie-dye, wooden block printing and weaving and amazing embroidery designs from the regions like Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Sindh, Odisha, Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kathiawad and Kutch are among the highlights of morning tours. Sacred bronzes, manuscripts, sculptures, woodworks and other collections are displayed in the afternoon tours. Guided tours in the morning and afternoon allow up to 20 and 10 visitors respectively. Handbags, mobile phones and cameras are not allowed. The museum is restricted for children below 10 years.
Introduction Better known as Patang Kite Museum, this interesting tourist attraction is a part of Sanskar Kendra, a museum premises designed by none other than Le Corbusier. Kite Museum, which substantiates Gujarat’s association with kite flying, is well-known for the collection of nearly 125 kites, some of which are over 70 years old. One of the top attractions is the huge kite made of more than 400 pieces of paper which appears as a beautiful collage of small kites. Kites made of assorted materials like cotton; nylon and bamboo apart from paper are kept on display at the museum. Among the kites collected from different parts of the world, the hexagonal Japanese Rokoku kite draws maximum attention. Kites with vivid designs, including miniature paintings, mirror work and block printing are the notable attractions as well. One can also explore the interesting kites depicting folk dances and political leaders of India. The museum also offers information about the world history of kite flying. Established in 1985, Kite Museum is indeed a distinguished tourist site in Ahmedabad.
