Popular as Palace of Mirrors, Sheesh Mahal is embellished with a number of coloured glasses and mirror work. Built in 1847, this palace is located behind the Moti Bagh Palace. A triple storey structure, the Mahal is embroidered by lovely gardens, artificial lake and luxury fountains. The walls and ceilings of Sheesh Mahal areadorned with artistic paintings by Rajasthani painters that enhance the beauty of this palace further. Nestled within the Qila Mubarak, the Mahal was once the residential palace of Maharajas of Patiala. An interesting thing about this Mahal is it has two watch towers at both the ends of the palace, with a dangling bridge that is prototyped following the popularity of Laxman Jhoola in Rishikesh. The stunning floral designs on the walls depict the ancient Mughal era. One of the many things that draw visitors to this place is the museum situated inside Sheesh Mahal. The museum houses the finest collection of antiques. Some of the most appealing things one can see in this museum are Chinese mirrors, statues, weaponry, engravings and utensils. Jama Masjid, a splendid magnum opus of Mugahl Architecture, deserves huge applause for its magnificent construction. Designated as India’s largest mosque and undoubtedly the most exquisite of all the Friday Mosques in the country, it boasts of brilliant use of red sandstone and white marble strips. Constructed in the 17 th century (completed in 1656), the mosque allows over 25,000 devotees to pray at a single time. Each of the north, south and east entrances to the mosque are accessible by flights of multiple stairs made of red sandstone and it boasts of 4 beautiful towers and two minarets, each about 40 m. high. About 260 pillars that are marvellously carved using Hindu and Muslim styles support the huge western chamber of the mosque. Other worth mentioning features of the mosque include its prayer hall with 11 arched entrances and its floor ornamented with white and black marble. The mosque is also known for its collection of sacred relics, including a beard hair of Prophet Mohammed, along with his sandals and footprint impressions on a marble block. An antique Quran written on deer skin is also a part of the treasure. The unruffled environment of the place make you feel separated from the whole world. Be sure to dress up conservatively. Entry for the tourists is prohibited during the prayer hours.
Friday Mosques were constructed in different parts of India during the reign of Mughal Empire. One of the most popular of these mosques is located in the city of Agra, which served as Mughal capital for hundreds of years. Better known as Jama Masjid, the mosque was built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his daughter Jahanara Begum in 1648. Standing on a raised platform, the mosque with its beautiful red sandstone and white marble construction is as popular as Taj Mahal and Agra Fort in the city. Five elegant arched entrances and a spacious courtyard with capacity for several thousands of people contribute towards the greatness of this divine structure. Mesmerizing domes made of sandstone and decorated with marble and a fountain with minaret-like kiosks are the added highlights. It further impresses with skilful inlaid work and proficient use of glazed tiles, carvings and paintings. Constructed in 1836, St. James Church is one of the oldest churches in Delhi, the national capital of India. The church is a part of the North India Church Diocese and is set in the peaceful lush green lawns. Colonel James Skinner pledged to build a church on survival when left critically injured in a battlefield. Skinner fulfilled his pledge by getting this church built over the course of 10 years from 1826 and 1836. Built in the Renaissance Revival style, the church borrows a lot from Italy’s Florence Cathedral in terms of the designs of porticoes, octagonal domes and stained glass windows. Among the tombs of the eminent people buried at the church, one can find those of James Skinner, William Fraser (British Commissioner of Delhi) and Thomas Metcalfe (an agent to India’s Governor General). The serene atmosphere of the church and its well-preserved charm attract the visitors in large numbers.
