Nageshwar Jyotirlinga

Located on the outskirts of Dwarka, the holy city established by Lord Krishna, Nageshwat Jyotirlinga Temple is acclaimed as one of the 12 Jyotirlingas (Lord Shiva’s form of an endless pillar of light). Apart from the self-manifested Shiva Lingam, the temple is famous for a huge statue of Shiva in the sitting position. The jyotirlinga appeared after Lord Shiva protected the region from the bad deeds of a demon called Daaruka. The temple is believed to keep the world free from the evil forces. Lord Shiva is worshipped as the Lord of Nagas (snakes). Devotees visiting the temple are believed to get free of poison (or bad thoughts and actions). Unlike the usual scene in a Shiva Temple, where Gomukham directly faces the lingam, Gomukham faces east while the lingam faces south at this temple. The lingam is made of the holy stone called Dwarka shila with chakras on it. The temple is worth visiting on the occasion of Shivaratri and other important festivals.
