Herb-infused milky water of River Kaveri (or Cauvery) landing from carbonatite rocks create an extremely fascinating sight known as Hogenakkal Falls. No wonder that the name translates to ‘smoking rocks’ and the falls enjoy the designation as ‘Niagara of India’. A series of majestic waterfalls, the longest drop being 20 m., Hogenakkal is reputed for its waters containing medicinal properties as the river is constantly subjected to the local herbs. Watch the splendid performance of the falls from watchtowers and bridges. However, the bets way is to hire a coracle (made of bamboo with capacity of up to 6 people) and get ready for an unusual hide boating experience. The boat will take you close to various falls for a marvellous sightseeing experience. Swimming is another popular activity at the falls’ pond. Note that boating and swimming are strictly limited to dry season (post-monsoon) when the water currents are quite low. Apart from enjoying the heavenly beauty of the falls, you can also opt for trekking at the nearby Melagiri Hills. Yet another highlight is the herbal massage that you can receive under the shinning sun and over the rocks. Don’t miss to savour the delicious fish fry cooked using the local catch. At Hogenakkal, you may have to pay prices for numerous activities (climbing watchtowers, crossing rivers, crossing bridges and so on). A coracle ride may cost between INT 150-200.
