Jami Masjid, Junagadh

Presenting the impression of a fort, the Jami Masjid (also called Jama Masjid or Juma Masjid) of Junagadh is a popular Friday mosque in Gujarat. Located inside the iconic Upperkot Fort of this historic city, the mosque dates back to the 15 th century when Muhammad Begada annexed the princely state of Junagadh. Originally, the structure served as the royal residence or palace of Queen Ranakdevi and was converted into a mosque after the conquest by the Muslims. The most striking feature of the mosque is its 140 exquisitely carved pillars that firmly support the high ceiling of the structure. It is believed that these pillars were brought from Chudasama Palace. The mosque distinguishes itself from other similar mosques around India by its covered courtyard which is an exception among the mosques. One can enjoy the calm environment and majestic views of the surrounding hills from the mosque.
