The most coveted spot for bird lovers and hikers, Karnala Bird Sanctuary is positioned in Panvel, outside Mumbai. Although a small refuge, the place houses more than 150 resident bird species and 37 migratory bird species. Bird watchers can spot three rare bird varieties like Malabar Trogon, Ashy Minivet and three toed Kingfisher etc. Nuzzled in the heart of Sahyadri hills, the sanctuary consists of moist deciduous forest. Monsoon is regarded as the ideal time for spotting the paradise flycatcher, Malabar whistling thrush and magpie robin. The red breasted flycatcher, the blue-headed rock-thrush, the blue throat and blackbird bunch to the sanctuary during winter.
