Somnath Temple

One of the holiest Hindu shrines in the world, Somnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located on the west coast of India in the holy town of Somnath, the temple accommodates the first and the foremost of the 12 Jyotirlingas (Lord Shiva in the form of eternal pillar of light) and is a popular pilgrimage destination. Originally built by Moon God in pure gold, the temple was reconstructed in silver by the demon king Ravana and in sandalwood by Lord Krishna during different eras. The temple has a long history in which it was destructed numerous times by the Muslim raiders, but was reconstructed every time by the devoted followers. The present day temple represents magnificent Chalukya style and is admired for its spiritual significance. An important feature is the arrow pillar called Baan Stambh which claims that there is no piece of land in the direction from the temple to Antarctica. People of all religions and cultures can visit the temple, though the sanctum sanctorum can be entered only be the priests. It is advised to dress up traditionally, avoid alcohol and smoking and remove footwear before entering the temple. Mobile phones, cameras and other gadgets are strictly prohibited.
