Sukhna Lake

Sukhna Lake is an artificial lake and a feather in the cap of the City beautiful Chandigarh. City’s chief architect Le Corbusier planned the lake’s construction in 1958 by building a dam to on the seasonal Sukhna Choe descending from the Shivalik Hills of the Himalayas. With a fascinating backdrop of hills and surrounded by lush green forests, the lake is a popular picnic spot in the region. The nature’s splendour can be enjoyed during sunrise, sunset, mist-covered mornings as well as during monsoons. The dam has emerged as a beautiful promenade which remains busy with activities like leisurely strolls, jogging and exercising and family picnics. The boating facility (available till 06:00 p.m.) is an added attraction and the lake hosts adventures like rowing, kayaking, water-skiing, sailing and sculling. Lake Club and a variety of food hubs, along with some fun-filled rides for the children, make the place full on entertainment. Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake Sanctuary and a number of temples in the close proximity are also worth visiting. The lake is also a paradise for the birdwatchers as it attracts Siberian ducks, cranes and storks and is a protected national wetland. Mango Festival and many other festivals and cultural programs are held at the lake round the year.
