Since the 8th century, the fabulous temple complex of Eklingji has been a subject of fascination among the visitors. Dedicated to Lord Eklingji (a form of Lord Shiva), the main temple in the complex was refurbished in the 15th century. Some of the striking features of the temple complex include heavy and carved silver doors, pyramidal roof and artistic use of marble and granite. The idol inside the temple is a beautiful four-faced image, with once face each of Surya (Sun), Vishnu, Brahma and Rudra (Shiva). A Shiva Lingam in the shrine, along with bronze images of Nandi (the bull, Shiva’s mount), is of great reverence among the pilgrims. The main temple is jam-packed with pilgrims on Monday, the day considered auspicious for worshipping Shiva. Two water tanks, named Tulsi Kund and Karz Kund, within the temple complex contain holy waters. In addition, there are 108 small and big temples in and around the temple complex and visiting each one can add to your pleasant experience of being there. Eklingji Town is also famous for many other temples, including Saas-Bahut Temple, Jain Temple, Nathon ka Mandir and more.
One of the crowning glories of Udaipur is Fateh Sagar Lake, an artificial lake originally constructed in 1687 by Maharana Jai Singh and refurbished by Maharana Fatah Singh some 200 years later. Known for its serene atmosphere and picturesque beauty, the lake is bounded on three sides by the rugged Aravalli Hills. The contrast of blue water with greenery is extremely eye-pleasing. Fatah Sagar Lake has three islands, the most popular being the Nehru Park. Accessible by an exhilarating ride in speed motor boat, the park has a zoo and a restaurant. The second island is popular for its get fountains, while Udaipur Solar Observatory finds home at the third island. The most spectacular view of the lake and its surroundings comes alive at evening when gleaming lights add fascinating visual effects to the whole sight. Be sure to not miss the sunset view as it will keep you amused for long time. Hariyali Amavasya Mela is the annual festival organized near the lake in the months of August-September.
Lake Pichola is one of the most beautiful and picturesque lakes in Udaipur. It is a man made fresh water lake, which was constructed way back in 1362 AD and is 3 miles in length and 2 miles in width, making it one of the biggest lakes in Udaipur. Named after the nearby village of Picholi, this lake caters to the drinking and irrigation needs of the city. There are four islands in this lake namely Jag Niwas, Jag Mandir, Mohan Mandir and Arsi Vilas, which is a small island that has an ammunition depot apart from a palace built by the Maharanas of Udaipur to enjoy the sunset on the lake. Mohan Mandir on the other hand is a sanctuary for a variety of birds including kingfishers, egrets, tufted ducks and coots among others. Sunset cruises and boat rides are veritable tourist attractions of Pichola. Apart from the panoramic views of the mountains and the islands, it is great bet to enjoy some of the submerged and standing historic monuments along the lake. The main attraction of the boat ride is the spectacular sights of the island palaces that stand testimonies of the glorious past. Jagmandir Palace, built in the 17th century is one of the oldest and the most impressive palaces.
Udaipur is the city of regal wonders and the Jag Mandir Palace undoubtedly tops the list. Also known as Jagat Mandir Palace (after Maharana Jagat Singh who led to its completion) and Lake Garden Palace, it is actually an assemblage of many spectacular palaces and structures. Built over a span of more than 100 years (from 1551-1652), the palace stands elegantly on one of the two natural islands of Lake Pichola. Among the most mesmerizing highlights of the palace complex, the eight huge marble elephants at the entrance in a welcoming pose instantly attract one’s attention. There is a huge royal garden dotted with trees, lawns and fountains which escalate the experience of being here. Gul Mahal, Bara Patharon ka Mahal, Kunwar Pada ka Mahal and Zenana Mahal are the stunningly beautiful palaces with rich architectural splendour. Darikhana is an open terrace adorned with marble pillars and one can also visit the museum to explore the history of the place. Jag Mandir nowadays is an internationally renowned venue for organizing royal-style weddings and other social parties and celebrations. The complex also accommodates a heritage hotel, a restaurant and a bar. You can tirelessly savour the beauty of Lake Pichola and other nearby attractions when the whole area basks in golden glory of the setting sun and hundreds of birds and bats fill the sky.
Located on the hilltop in Udaipur, Monsoon Palace is an impressive residence overlooking the beauty of Lake Pichola. Also famous as Sajjan Garh Palace, Monsoon Palace is named after the Mewar Dynasty - Maharana Sajjan Singh. Showcasing a gorgeous view of the nearby palaces, lakes and fencing area, Monsoon Palace is constructed using white marbles. The glittering palace with its fountains, jharokhas and beautiful carving of leaves and flowers on the wallsmake the environment lovely. Monsoon Palace has a unique water harvesting structure to collect rainwater. Many believe that the castle was built so that Maharana Sajjan Singh can get a view of his Chittaurgarh home through this palace. One of the less known yet interesting facts about this palace, it was used in 1983 for picturizing James Bond film ‘Octopussy.’ Other than this place, visitors can also explore several nearby attractions like City Palace, Jag Niwas, Jagdish Temple, Bhartiya Lok Kala Museum and Chini Chitrashala etc.
