About

Araku in Andhra Pradesh is inhabited by people from numerous tribes. This inspired the establishment of Araku Tribal Museum in 1996 which soon became a tourist hotspot. Constructed from mud, the museum has amazing rustic appearance and showcases authentic tribal culture in the most alluring manner. Main exhibits at the museum include utensils, weapons, clothes, jewellery, handicrafts and other items used by the tribal people. Other sections portray the beautiful dance forms, wedding rituals, drawings and artworks and other important aspects of the local tribal culture. The museum also has a shop at the second level from where one can purchase interesting tribal items. Highlights also include a fortune teller with a parrot which speaks in local language.

How to Reach

By air: Visakhapatnam has the nearest airport at the distance of about 107 km. The airport caters to the domestic flights from the cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata and also to the international flights to Dubai and Singapore.

By rail: Araku Valley Railway Station is connected to Visakhapatnam by daily train service. The journey which takes around 6 hours is spellbinding as one passes through numerous tunnels and can relish the scenic beauty throughout. The station is around 3 km. from the museum and one can hire cab or auto to cover this distance.

By road: Araku Valley is conveniently connected to the neighbouring city of Visakhapatnam by road. It is possible to travel the distance by state buses, private vehicles and taxis. The journey is extremely relaxing as one comes across numerous natural vistas and unique nature’s splendour all over. From Araku valley bus station, one can hire cabs or autos to reach the museum.
