A colonial prison, also referred to as Kala Paani, Cellular Jail is undoubtedly among the top attractions of Port Blair. Constructed by the British between 1896 and 1906, it was meant for one among the most notorious punishments given to the revolutionaries of Indian Freedom Struggle and other political prisoners. Solitary confinement and physical and mental tortures were meted out to the convicts at the jail. After India became free, the jail earned the designation of a National Memorial. Today, it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors who pay homage to the brave heroes like Batukeshwar Dutt, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Barinder Kumar Ghose and many others. The Light & Sound Show honouring the sacrifice of the freedom fighters is held every evening from 06:00 p.m. (both in Hindi and English) and is worth attending.

By air: Port Blair Airport is about 4 km. from Cellular Jail. Auto-rickshaws as well as taxis can be hired for the trip. Local buses can also help you travel to the jail.
By rail: Andaman and Nicobar Islands have no rail facility. The nearest railway station on the India’s mainland is at Paradip, which is more than 1,150 km. from Port Blair. Ships and cruise vessels can be used to reach the place from the mainland India.
By road: The road leading to Cellular Jail is in good condition and one can hire a scooter, motorcycle, auto-rickshaw or taxi to reach the place.
