Fort Dansborg

The only Danish structure in India, Fort Dansborg represents Denmark’s short-lived colonial rule in the country. Facing the Bay of Bengal, it is a spectacular trapezoidal structure built in 1620 and sold to the British in the mid of 19th century. Huge halls, towering columns and housing many interesting structures, the fort is no less than a small European town. Zion Church, Masilamaninathar Temple, Town Gateway, New Jerusalem Church, Danish Governor Bungalow, Muhldorff’s House and Rehling’s House are some of the notable structures within this huge complex. The main attraction of the fort is its museum section that exhibits some interesting collections of Danish coins, weapons, seals, paintings, palm leaf manuscripts and Danish ship models. Warehouses, kitchens and dark tunnels leading to the prisons are also worth exploring. Charming sunrise views from the fort can leave you speechless. It is advised to avoid visiting the fort during monsoons when the area is prone to cyclones.
