Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary is rich in fauna and is the most well preserved national park and sanctuary in the whole Tamil Nadu region. It was earlier known as Annamalai Wildlife Sanctuary until Indira Gandhi, the famous Indian leader, visited this place in 1961. This place is the homeland of various animals including leopard, elephant, guar, Nilgiri langur, tiger, the lion tailed macaque and several birds. The famous scenic spot, Top Slip which is at a height of 800 meters is also situated inside this National Park. One should not miss the Elephant Camp in this sanctuary. It is a beautiful place for bird watchers as it is also the home for many rare birds.

How to Reach

By air: Nearest airport to reach Indira Gandhi National Park and Sanctuary is Coimbatore International Airport (about 104 km.). Regular flights from major cities are available to reach this place. Buses and private cabs can be hired for reaching the national park and sanctuary area from the airport.

By rail: Pollachi Junction Railway Station (about 56 km.) and Coimbatore Junction Railway Station (about 96 km.) are the nearest rail head to reach Indira Gandhi Wildlife National Park and Sanctuary comfortably.

By road: Indira Gandhi National Park and Sanctuary is well connected by road. One can hire a four wheeler like a jeep to reach there easily. Many private and government bus services are available from major areas like Pollachi (about 55 km.), Udumalaipettai (about 73 km.) and Ramanathapuram (about 99 km.). Several buses and taxis ply regularly to reach the national park and sanctuary area.
