About

Kumarakom bird sanctuary is set on the banks of the picturesque Vembanad Lake in Kottayam District in Kerala. Also known as Vembanad Bird Sanctuary, it was developed by an Englishman in a rubber plantation and was originally known as Baker’s Estate. Spread over 14 acres of lush green wooded forest, Vembanad bird sanctuary is well known for the huge flocks of migratory birds from as far as Siberia. Wood peckers, waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, egret, heron, cormorant, moorhen, darter, Brahminy kite the duck night herons, paradise fly catchers, Siberian cranes, king fishers- the list of birds that have made this sanctuary their home is literally awe inspiring. A cruise along the Vembanad Lake and Pathiramanal Island, which is a small island in the lake, is the most delightful option to experience the beauty of this sanctuary and the diversity of the avian population. Nestled on the southern banks of the KavanarRiver, the bird sanctuary has well laid out paths to enable the visitors to explore it on foot. Early morning is the best time to spot the birds when they fly in groups over the lake from their nests.
