Originally called Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew (meaning three-step waterfall), the enthralling Elephant Falls was named so by the British who found a nearby rock resembling an elephant. The rock doesn’t exist anymore, but the charm of this nature’s marvel definitely does. Its waters fall in three steps, the final step being the tallest and also the most fascinating one. Visitors to the waterfall can descend to the bottom through steep stairs, admiring the full journey of the fall. Roaring sounds of the water and cool atmosphere add to the thrill of being here. Green vegetation makes the overall scenery a visual treat for the eyes. There are some stalls selling hot tea and few shops selling interesting souvenirs. Be sure to carry cameras as the place promises some great photography opportunities.
Located close to India’s border with Bangladesh, Baghmara Reserve Forest is the perfect combination of mesmerizing natural beauty and captivating wildlife. Hills and valleys covered with dense forests allow passages for many rivers and enthralling vantage points. Wildlife lovers get to see leopards, elephants (in huge herds), langurs, gaurs and many other mammals. The place is also popular for watching birds and sightseeing numerous species of butterflies. An exciting attraction of the reserve forest is the presence of pitcher plant. One can explore abundant flora while walking the natural trails inside the reserve. Baghmara Reserve Forest is located about 4 km. away from Baghmara town which serves as the headquarters of South Garo Hills. Few nearby attractions include Siju Caves, Siju Bird Sanctuary and Balpakram National Park.
Lady Hydari Park is one of the must see spots in Shillong. This spectacular garden is landscaped in Japanese style and has a well manicured lawn and flower beds with different plants including native plants and orchids. It is best known for its rich collection of rose plants. Widely popular among locals and tourists alike, this park is indeed a visual delight and a place to relax in the lap of Mother Nature. Named after the first lady of the province and the wife of the Governor of Assam, Lady Hydari, this park has about 73 species of birds, 140 species of reptiles and other mammals. Managed by the state forest department, this park has also a mini-zoo, the first of its kind in Shillong. It houses many animals and birds and also has a butterfly museum. There is a spacious and well kept children’s park nearby with swings, slips and other rides for children. Lady Hydari Park spreads over half a kilometre and is close to various other tourist attractions like the fabled Crinoline Falls. You can also enjoy a refreshing dip in the city’s only pool, Crinoline pool, which is also nearby.
