The erstwhile hunting grounds of Nizams, the rulers of Hyderabad, this national park is at presnt home to various animals including various species of birds, reptiles and animals including the state animal of Andhra Pradesh , the black bucks famous for their spiral horns. The park is located in Vanasthalipuram, at a distance of about 15-km on the Hyderabad- Vijayawada road. A variety of migratory birds also make a stiopover in the park during the winter months. The park is named after the famous Jain saint 'Lord Mahavira' and is maintained by the Forest Department. Spreading over an area of 3,758 acres, this park is also the largest green lung space in the city of Hyderabad. 189 hectares of diverse landscape including grasslands dotted with acacia trees. The visitors can make use of the rest sheds & surveillance towers to spot the animals. Enjoy a van ride within the park to view the animals from close. The park conducts safari trips every day between 9.30 am and 5.30 pm apart from guided tours, which enable the tourists to know more about this national park an its wild life. The butterfly garden in this park is another must see spot to see a variety of brightly coloured butterflies The forest Department also undertakes audio-visual teaching on environment & wildlife in its library. There is also an exhibition hall where various exhibits related to wild life are displayed.
Dubbed as a ‘jungle amidst the concrete jungle,’ Kasu Brahmananda Reddy National Park is situated in Jubilee Hill in Hyderabad. Habitat to about 600 plant species, 140 bird species and 30 varieties of butterflies, the park is a haven for nature and bird lovers. Home to the popular Chiran Palace, the national park is named after the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Kasu Brahmananda Reddy. The palace resembles a big villa that includes all modern amenities. Unfolded in nearly 150 hectares, the national park also houses a small yet interesting bungalow - Mor bungalow. One can spot the fascinating sight of Small Indian Civet and Jungle Cat. Some of the other species found here are monitor lizards, wild boars, pangolin and porcupines etc. Bird Safari and Jungle Safari are the major attractions of this place.
A granite hill some 11 km. from the historical city of Hyderabad accommodates the extraordinary Golconda (Golkonda) Fort, counted among the most magnificent forts of the world. Spread over several km. sq. of area, the fort exemplifies intelligent self-defence features, including three fortification rows, doors studded with iron spikes and an impressive acoustic system. A clap at the main entrance can be heard more than a km. away, something that would alarm the fort’s residents about the enemy attacks. Originally built by Kakatiyas, the fort exchanged hands from Baihmanis and Qutb Shahi Dynasty to Mughals and Nizams of Hyderabad. Boasting of 87 strong semi-circular bastions, 80 gateways and 4 drawbridges, the fort accommodates some truly remarkable structures like palaces, durbar hall, mosques, temples, magazines, stables, halls, royal apartments, prisons and pavilions. Some beautiful gardens within the complex once added to the glory and still have splendid beauty. Ornamental designs of lotuses, peacocks and lions and a variety of carvings and scrollwork are the visual treat to the eyes. Don’t miss the light and sound show organized from 06:30 p.m. to 07:30 p.m. in summer and from 07:00 p.m. to 08:00 p.m. in winter. Ticket for the show costs INR 100 (adults) and INR 75 (children) in VIP class and INR 50 (adults) and INR 30 (children) in non-executive class.
One of the oldest Hindu temples dedicated to Bhadrakali (a form of Goddess Kali), Bhadrakali Temple in the holy city of Warangal is visited by flocks of pilgrims every year. Located on the exquisite Lake Bhadrakali, the temple is surrounded by huge boulders and houses a beautiful idol of the Goddess. There are statues and carvings of Goddess’s mount lion, Subramanya Swamy, Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiva. Constructed way back in the 7th century, the temple lost its significance at the end of the Medieval Age and was renovated in 1940s. There are more than a dozen temples of religious importance in the close proximity. One can enjoy boating at the lake. Another engrossing activity is to watch the sun majestically setting down behind the lake. Warnings Strict cloth codes must be followed at some temples. Entry to non-Hindus is prohibited in few temples. Strictly follow the rules and rituals.
One of the many similar constructions across India, Birla Mandir is a white marble Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara (Lord Vishnu). The marble used in the construction was imported from Rajasthan. The temple is a wonderful architectural masterpiece showcasing elements of South India, Rajasthan and Utkala temple styles. Beautiful inscriptions on marble are worth exploring. The main deity has his 11 ft. high image made of granite. The temple complex rests atop Naubath Pahad which is around 280 ft. high. There are other shrines dedicated to Padmavati and Andal, the consorts of Venkateshwara. A Buddhist temple is also located within the premises. It is a great experience to view nearby attractions like Hussain Sagar Lake and various gardens from the temple. Evening chants at the temple are extremely soothing for the mind.
One of the oldest mosques in Hyderabad, Mecca Masjid (also called Makkah Masjid) is one of the heritage buildings from Old Hyderabad. This mosque contains bricks made from soil brought from the holy city of Mecca which accounts for its name. The fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, is said to have played a significant role in the construction of the mosque. Built in 1694, Mecca Masjid has arched granite facades, a main praying hall and a courtyard. Inscriptions from the holy book of Quran are found engraved on the walls of the mosque. The tombs of Asaf Jahi rulers are found in the courtyard of the building. The spacious main hall of the mosque is large enough to hold 10,000 worshipers at a time. The tall minarets that are found here are intricately carved and are beautiful to behold. Octagonal balconies and granite smokescreens are other excellent elements of its architecture. Among many legends surrounding this holy place, the most popular one is that a hair of Prophet Muhammad is preserved in one of the rooms. Another well-known belief is that whoever sits on the stone and slab benches of the mosque returns at least one more time to sit on them. Everyday, thousands of people flock to pray at this holy mosque.
Facilitating India’s 3rd largest hydroelectric project, Srisailam Dam is located at the border of the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and is an engineering marvel built on River Krishna. Occupying a deep gorge in the Nallamala Hills, the dam boasts of flawless natural beauty all around. At the height of about 300 m., the dam is about 512 m. high and has 12 crest gates. It is a mesmerizing sight when the gates open and loads of water fall from the height. Another highlight of the place is the amazing view of River Krishna, one of the sacred rivers of South India. The reservoir of about 800 sq. km. supports boating. You can spend hours relishing the beauty of the place and explore the nearby attractions like Hindu Temple, cave temples, rock shelters and ancient ruins. It is worth mentioning that the roads to the dam are closed for traffic from 09:00 p.m. to 06:00 a.m.
Charminar, the iconic monument of Hyderabad is considered to be one of the most elegant pieces of Islamic architecture. It was built by Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in 16th century to celebrate the elimination of Plague epidemic from the city. This structure is one of the most iconic structures of India because of its sturdy, detailed and dignified aesthetics. It is made up of granite, limestone and pulverised marble. The solitude and serenity inside the monument adds value to this amazing build-up. It is said that there is an underground tunnel that connects Golconda fort to Charminar, meant as an escape route for Qutb Shahi rulers in case of an emergency, though its location is still unknown. There is a beautiful mosque which is located on the top floor, where people offer their prayers every Friday. A marvellous view of the hustling Hyderabad can be easily seen from its balcony. It is an awesome experience to see that the four arches of Charminar were made with geometric accuracy. A tour to Hyderabad is incomplete without a visit to this glorious history of the city.
One of the largest manmade lakes in the world, Hussain Sagar Lake was constructed in 1562 across a River Musi tributary. Over all these years, the lake has emerged as a fabulous tourist spot with unique exquisiteness and gamut of activities. Spread over an area of about 5.7 sq. km. and connecting the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, the lake is also known as Tank Bund. A white granite monolithic Buddha statue, about 18 m. high, standing on a small island in the middle of the lake is a visual treat for the visitors. The lake hosts regular sailing tournaments and regattas during which the lake gets immensely beautified with colourful boats and yachts. Attending one such event can make your trip to the lake even more rewarding. Visit the lake at evening and admire its beauty from the Necklace Road. You will be awe-struck with the splendour of gleaming colourful lights, dancing fountains and captivating atmosphere all around. There are many attractions adjacent to the lake that you can’t afford to miss. Some of them include Lumbini Park, Sanjeevaiah Park, NTR Gardens, Birla Temple and numerous bronze statues of state’s eminent personalities.
Marking the final resting sites of the seven Qutub Shahi Rulers who ruled the region for more than 150 years, Qutub Shahi Tombs are located in the middle of the Ibrahim Bagh. Constructed in the 16th and the 17th centuries, the tombs flaunt superlative architecture, mixing the elements of Indian, Persian and Deccan styles. Splendid archways and impressive stonework offer an exceptional visual treat to the visitors. Among the seven tombs, the one accommodating the mausoleum of Muhammed Quli Qutub Shah is the most notable with many beautiful Persian inscriptions. The complex also has tombs of royal family members and other important people. Most of the tombs have mosques adjoining them. Visiting the place during the sunset hours can be an outstanding experience as it allows viewing these architectural marvels bathing in the golden light. The manicured gardens add another dimension to the place’s magnificence.
Chowmahalla Palace or Chowmahallat is a complex accommodating four palaces and many royal structures in the city of Hyderabad. Built way back in the 1880s as the royal residence for the Nawabs of Asaf Jahi lineage, it boasts of enthralling architectural wonders surrounded by lavish gardens and lawns and beautiful fountains. The eternal glory of the place helped it earn the UNESCO Asia Pacific Merit award in 2010. The complex is divided into North and South Courtyards. Four neo-classical style palaces, Afzal Mahal, Aftab Mahal, Mahtab Mahal and Tahniyat Mahal, in the Southern Courtyard are direct from the fairytales and can easily engage your attention for hours. The Northern Courtyard accommodates the inimitable Durbar Hall called Khilwat Mubarak. Marble platform, royal throne and crystal Belgian chandeliers are the key highlights of the hall. Clock Tower, Council Hall and a library are other worthwhile sections of the palace. Visitors willing to spend the hefty price of INR 2,000 can visit the palace at night when it boasts of majestic beauty under lighted ambiences. Events and celebrations can also be booked at the palace.
A relatively small yet urban park, Lumbini Park is a place dedicated for relaxation and amusement. Nestled in the heart of the city, this park has a variety of flowering plants, lush green grass, an array of cacti and rocks. Sprawling in about 7.5 acres, this is a wonderful place for people of all age groups and interests. The park houses a huge and eye-catchy statue of Lord Buddha. With a lot of things dedicated for fun and entertainment of families available in the park, some of the dramatic highlights of the Lumbini Park are 2D laser show, eye-popping musical fountain, crazy cars and boat riding. Many visitors come to this place to see the vibrant laser show (7:15 p.m. on weekday and 7:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on weekends) and breathtaking musical fountain show (6:30 p.m.) every evening. Boating is one of the amusing factors that pull a number of visitors to this place. Another important thing that makes this park popular is its proximity with the HussainSagar Lake, Birla Mandir and Necklace Road.
