Gurez Valley Permit: what you need in 2026

The border valleys near the Line of Control are sensitive areas. Access is not a simple tourist ticket. It is a security matter handled by the district administration and the Army.

For Indian citizens, the requirement has changed over time. In some periods visitors could travel to Gurez after registering at the Army check post, and in other periods a formal permission was needed. Because this is controlled locally and can change, you must confirm the current rule with the Bandipora district administration and at the check post on the Razdan Pass road before you go.

For foreign nationals, border areas along the Line of Control are treated more strictly than the rest of Kashmir. A foreign national should confirm well in advance with the district administration whether entry is allowed and what permission is needed, and should not assume access.

For Bangus, Keran and Machil, treat each one as a separate case. Whether you can enter, and how far, is decided by the Army and the district administration for that valley on that day.

Because the rule is set locally, carry a full document set and be ready to register:

• Original government photo identity such as Aadhaar, voter card, passport or driving licence.
• Several photocopies of your identity document.
• Spare passport size photographs.
• Your vehicle papers and the driver identity if you travel by car.
• Foreign nationals should carry the passport and Indian visa and any permission letter.

Confirm the exact list with the district administration, because the check post can ask for more.

Because access is controlled locally, the process is on the ground, not a single online form:

• Confirm the current rule first. Contact the District Administration Bandipora and ask whether Gurez is open and what registration or permission is needed for your dates.
• Prepare your documents and photocopies.
• Travel from Srinagar toward Bandipora and then up the Razdan Pass road.
• Stop and register at the Army check post on the way if that is required. Show your identity documents.
• Keep your documents ready for further check posts inside the valley.
• For Bangus, Keran or Machil, ask the district administration and the local Army post about access for that specific valley before you set out.

If any official gives you a written permission or a registration slip, keep it with you for the whole trip.

The main destination is Dawar, the central town of Gurez, on the Kishanganga river. The Government of India rural tourism listing places Dawar about 136 km from Srinagar, at about 7,860 feet, ringed by snow peaks.

From Dawar you can see the valley, the river and villages such as those near Tulail further in. How far up the valley you may go depends on the Army, because the upper valley runs close to the Line of Control. Some stretches are out of bounds. Follow the check post instructions exactly.

Bangus, Keran and Machil are separate frontier valleys. Access to each is decided locally and the forward stretches near the line are controlled by the Army.

The usable season for Gurez is roughly late May or June to October. The Razdan Pass carries heavy snow in winter and the valley is often cut off for months.

The road can close after snow or landslides even in the open season. A clear morning can turn into a blocked road.

Access is also a security decision. The district administration or the Army can limit or stop entry for security reasons at short notice. When that happens, no visitor is allowed forward, whatever you planned. Keep spare days and a flexible plan.

By air: fly to Srinagar (Sheikh ul Alam International Airport). It is the base for the drive to Gurez.

By road: drive from Srinagar to Bandipora, then up over the Razdan Pass, then down into Gurez and on to Dawar. The Bandipora to Gurez road and the Kanzalwan to Dawar road connect the valley. Where to stay: Dawar and nearby villages have guest houses, a tourism bungalow and homestays. Beds are limited, so book ahead in the busy months. Do not expect large hotels.

Gurez is a high mountain valley reached over a high pass, so take care:

• The Razdan Pass is high and cold. Weather changes fast. Do not attempt it in bad weather.
• Carry warm layers even in summer. Nights are cold.
• Roads are narrow and slow with steep drops. Do not drive the pass after dark.
• Fuel and phone network are limited. Fill your tank in Bandipora and carry cash.
• This is a border area. Stay on the road, follow every Army instruction, and do not wander toward the Line of Control.
