Kamakhya Darshan: what you need in 2026

Kamakhya is among the most important of the Shakti Peethas, where the yoni, the creative part of the Goddess Sati, is said to have fallen. So there is no usual idol in the sanctum. Instead you take darshan of a stone cleft, which a natural spring keeps moist, and which pilgrims worship as the Goddess. This makes Kamakhya a deeply tantric and powerful shrine. The sanctum is dim, and you reach it down steps into the cave like inner chamber, so move slowly with the queue.

If you do not want to pay, the general queue is free. On ordinary days it moves at a fair pace, but on weekends, festival days and above all during the Ambubachi Mela it is extremely crowded, which is why many pilgrims choose the special darshan. The Ambubachi Mela, usually in June, is the temple's biggest annual gathering, when the shrine closes for a few days, as people believe the Goddess rests, and then reopens. Crowds are enormous, the temple may limit or suspend the special darshan on the peak days, and the whole town fills with sadhus and pilgrims. The temple opens early in the morning, when the priests bathe and worship the Goddess, and stays open through the day with a break, closing in the evening after the aarti. The exact hours shift on festival days and during Ambubachi, and the Devalaya sets them, so check the official site before you go. Reach early for the calmest darshan and the coolest part of the day.

Dress modestly for the temple. You reach the sanctum down steps into a dim, damp cave chamber, so wear easy shoes you can remove at the counter and take care on the wet stone. A security check applies, and staff may restrict phones and bags near the sanctum, so travel light and use the cloakroom. By old custom some pilgrims make animal offerings on special days, which you may see near the temple.

Kamakhya is on the Nilachal hill, about eight kilometres from central Guwahati in Assam. The nearest airport is Guwahati, and Kamakhya has its own railway station, with Guwahati the main junction. You reach the hilltop by road, by taxi or auto up the winding road, and many pilgrims pair the trip with a Brahmaputra river cruise and the wider Northeast.

Carry your special darshan booking and a photo identity, and a passport if you come from abroad. Carry a little cash for offerings and the cloakroom. Wear easy shoes for the steps and the wet stone.
