Kinnaur Kailash Yatra: what you need in 2026

You can go only if you are strong and medically fit. This is a steep, long, high climb, and the weather can turn dangerous fast.

The medical rule is firm. A medical fitness certificate is compulsory for all pilgrims. A medical check facility is set up at the registration camp in Tangling village. You also submit an undertaking before you start.

Do not attempt this yatra if you have a heart condition, uncontrolled high blood pressure, breathing trouble, or if you are unwell. It is not suitable for pregnant women, very young children, or people with no high trek experience. Train your body for weeks before you go.

Registration is mandatory. No pilgrim is permitted without valid registration.

There is a daily cap on pilgrims, divided between online and offline registration and a local quota. In the recent official notice the daily figure was 375 pilgrims, split as 175 online, 125 offline, and 75 through the local adventure tour operators association. Numbers can change each year, so check the current notice.

Online registration, step by step:

• Open the Kinnaur district website (hpkinnaur.nic.in) and find the current Kinnaur Kailash Yatra notice.
• Register online in the window given in the notice. In the recent notice the online portal opened on a set date and time for a set range of yatra dates.
• Fill your details and upload the required documents, including the medical fitness certificate.
• Submit the undertaking.
• Save and print your registration slip and carry it.

Offline registration, step by step:

• Go to the registration camp at Tangling village, set up near the Primary Health Centre at Tangling.
• The camp opens from 06:00 in the morning daily during the window and works on a first come, first served basis.
• Get your medical check done at the camp.
• Submit your documents and undertaking and collect your registration slip.

Carry a valid government photo identity for each person.

The base for the trek is Tangling village, reached from Powari on the Kinnaur road. The registration and medical camp is at Tangling.

From Tangling the path climbs steeply through forest and then open high ground toward the Kinnaur Kailash Shivling, a tall natural rock that pilgrims worship as a form of Lord Shiva. The climb gains a lot of height and passes a holy pond area on the way. The full up and down journey is usually done over a couple of days by fit trekkers, with an overnight halt on the mountain.

A longer, harder route exists as a full parikrama (circuit) that crosses a high pass and takes several days. That circuit is for experienced high trekkers with guides and full gear, and it too runs only within the sanctioned window.

Exact stage names, stage distances, and altitudes vary by route and are not fixed in the official notice, so confirm the current route, distances, and halts with the organizing committee at Reckong Peo before you go.

The yatra runs for a short fixed window each year, usually in the second half of July to the middle of August. In the recent official notice the window ran from 30 July to 15 August, entirely subject to weather.

The exact dates change every year and are set by the Kinnaur district administration. The yatra can be suspended at short notice. In an earlier year it was stopped mid season due to continuous rain, rockfall, fog, and other dangerous weather, under the Disaster Management Act. Confirm the current dates on the official Kinnaur website before you plan travel (last checked September 2026).

Treat every number as something to confirm on the official site, because charges change each year.

• Green tax: a green tax of Rs 200 per pilgrim was set in the recent notice. Confirm the current amount on the official notice (last checked September 2026).
• Porter charges: optional porter charges apply at local rates. Agree the rate before you start.
• Guides and gear: local guides and gear hire cost extra. Agree rates in advance.

This is a hard high trek done on foot. Ponies and palki are not a practical option on the steep upper climb. Do not expect a pony ride to the Shivling.

Porters are available and optional porter charges apply. You can hire a porter to carry your load, but you must be fit to walk the climb yourself.

We could not confirm an official helicopter service for this yatra. Do not book a helicopter through any private seller who claims to fly pilgrims to the Shivling.

The base is Tangling village, near Powari and Reckong Peo in Kinnaur district.

• By air: the nearest airport is Shimla, and then you travel by road. The journey by road is long and mountainous.
• By train: the nearest railheads are Shimla (narrow gauge) and Chandigarh or Kalka (broad gauge). From there you take a bus or taxi.
• By road: drive on the Shimla to Kinnaur road through Rampur and Karcham to Powari, then to Tangling and Reckong Peo. Roads in Kinnaur can close after rain and landslides, so keep buffer time.

At Reckong Peo, Kalpa, and around Powari and Tangling you get hotels, guest houses, and homestays. During the yatra, basic tented arrangements and shelter may be set up on the route.

Community food service by devotee groups may run during the yatra window at or near the base. Availability follows the yatra dates, so it is thin outside the sanctioned window. Plan your food, since there is little on the upper mountain.

This is the part that saves lives. The climb is steep and high and the weather is the biggest danger.

• Get fit for weeks before you go.
• Carry and use your medical fitness certificate and do the medical check at Tangling.
• Climb slowly and drink water often. Watch for headache, giddiness, breathlessness, and vomiting. These are signs of altitude sickness. If they appear, stop, rest, and go down.
• Do not trek at night. Move only in daylight and only in a group.
• Do not take short cuts. Stay on the marked path.
• Watch the weather. Rain, rockfall, and fog make this route deadly, and the yatra can be suspended for safety. Follow the administration and turn back when told.
• Carry rain and cold protection. It is cold and wet on the mountain even in summer.

• Warm layers, a windproof jacket, and a good raincoat or poncho.
• Strong trekking shoes with grip. No slippers.
• A cap, gloves, and woollen socks.
• A trekking pole.
• A water bottle and high energy dry food.
• A first aid kit and your personal medicines.
• A torch and a power bank.
• Your photo identity, medical fitness certificate, and printed registration slip.
• A bag to carry your waste back.
