Padmanabhaswamy Darshan: what you need in 2026

Entry is for Hindus only, in keeping with the temple's long standing rule, and visitors are expected to respect the faith and customs. There is no entry fee for darshan. If you wish, you may give a donation at the temple's own counters. Come in the right dress and the right spirit, because the temple keeps its traditions strictly.

The temple follows a strict traditional Kerala dress code, and staff enforce it at the gate, so plan your clothes before you arrive. This is where visitors get turned away.

• Men wear a dhoti or mundu at the waist. The temple does not allow trousers, shirts or t-shirts inside the shrine area. If you arrive in trousers, staff may ask you to wear a dhoti over them.
• Women wear a saree, a set mundu, or a long skirt and blouse. At some counters they accept a salwar kameez with a dupatta. The temple does not allow trousers, jeans or short clothing.
• Children are expected to dress traditionally too.
• You can usually hire or buy a dhoti near the temple if you do not have one.

Reach the temple in the old fort area of Thiruvananthapuram. Deposit your phone, camera, footwear and bags at the stands outside, because the temple does not allow electronics inside. Change into the correct dress if needed. Take a token or join the queue as directed for the darshan slot, because the temple gives darshan in sessions through the day, not all the time. Move with the queue for the darshan of the reclining Lord Vishnu, seen through three separate doors, showing the face, the Brahma on the lotus at the middle, and the feet.

The temple gives darshan in several fixed sessions across the morning and again in the evening, and closes in between, in the South Indian pattern. The sessions are set, so plan your visit inside them and reach in good time, because the queue closes for each session. The temple keeps grand festivals twice a year, the Alpashy utsavam and the Painkuni utsavam, each ending with a procession of the deities to the sea for a holy bath, the aarat. Once in six years comes the Lakshadeepam, the festival of a hundred thousand lamps, a rare and beautiful sight. If you visit during a festival, the temple is busier and some routines change, so check the days and reach early.

The temple is in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala. Thiruvananthapuram has the Trivandrum international airport and a major railway station, both about five to six kilometres from the temple, which stands in the East Fort area. You reach it by taxi or auto, then walk in through the fort. Many travellers pair it with Kovalam beach, about sixteen kilometres away, and the Kerala backwaters.

Carry the correct traditional dress, or plan to hire a dhoti near the temple. Carry a photo identity, and a little cash for the cloakroom and any donation. Do not carry your phone or camera to the gate, because you must leave electronics outside. Be ready to go barefoot, and keep your visit within a darshan session. Carry water for the wait.

Many websites offer a "Padmanabhaswamy VIP darshan online booking" and quote prices, but the temple does not sell darshan online. Do not pay a website in advance for a darshan slot, because darshan is free and given at the temple by token and queue. Agents may offer a paid "quick darshan," but follow the temple's own token system instead. The safe approach is to arrive in the right dress and use the temple's counters.
