Srirangam, an island town by Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, is home to the Ranganathaswamy temple, the largest working temple complex in India and the first of the 108 sacred homes of Lord Vishnu.

The Viswaroopa seva
The special early morning darshan at Srirangam is the Viswaroopa seva, when the temple opens at dawn and you see Lord Ranganatha in the first light, reclining on the great serpent. Pilgrims prize it, so it fills fast. If you want the Viswaroopa darshan, reach very early and follow the official timings. Give yourself time afterwards to walk the seven concentric walls and see the thousand-pillar hall.
Vaikunta Ekadasi
The biggest festival is Vaikunta Ekadasi, usually in December or January, when the temple opens its Paradise Gate, the Vaikunta Vasal, and lakhs of pilgrims pass through it for a special blessing. The town fills completely. If you plan to visit for Vaikunta Ekadasi, book far ahead and be ready for an enormous crowd and a long, slow queue.

Add your details and pay online, then download your ticket. Reach the temple in good time, because the queues can be long on festival days. Carry your ticket and your original identity, because staff check them. Dress modestly, as at any temple.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Your biggest mistake would be booking on a private VIP darshan site that adds a fee. You book only on the official government system. Next, do not come at Vaikunta Ekadasi without a plan, into an enormous crowd. Do not rush the seven walls and the thousand-pillar hall, which are half the visit. Do not miss the nearby Jambukeswarar temple, one of the five element temples.
