Thirunallar, in Karaikal near Kumbakonam, is the most famous temple of Saturn, the planet Shani, in India, and the key stop on the nine planet, or Navagraha, circuit.

Saturn and the sacred bath
The reason pilgrims come is Saturn, Shani, who is believed to test people through his seven and a half year cycle, the Sade Sati, and his other periods. At Thirunallar you first bathe in the Nala Theertham tank, linked to the story of King Nala, who was freed of Saturn's grip here. Then you take darshan of Lord Dharbaranyeswarar and the Shani shrine. You can arrange an abhishekam or a lamp for Saturn at the temple counter, in oil and the dark blue and black that Saturn takes. Agree any priest's fee first, because that is a personal service, not the free darshan.

Shani Peyarchi
The biggest day is Shani Peyarchi, when Saturn moves from one sign to the next, which happens about once in two and a half years. On that day lakhs of pilgrims reach Thirunallar with you, and the queues run for many hours through the night. If you plan to visit for Shani Peyarchi, reach very early, be ready for an enormous crowd, and book your stay far ahead.
How to reach
Thirunallar is in Karaikal, on the Tamil Nadu coast, part of the union territory of Puducherry. The nearest big towns are Karaikal, a few kilometres away, and Nagapattinam, and it pairs naturally with the Navagraha circuit around Kumbakonam. The nearest airport is Tiruchirappalli, and Nagapattinam and Karaikal have railway links. Reach the temple by road from Karaikal in minutes.
What to carry
Carry a photo identity and modest dress for the shrine. Carry a change of clothes and a towel, because you bathe in the tank before darshan. Carry small cash for the bath, a pooja, lamps and the oil and blue or black cloth that Saturn takes, even where counters accept digital payment. Carry water and be ready for a long wait on Saturdays and at Shani Peyarchi.
