Toy Train Booking: what you need in 2026

Everyone who takes a seat needs a ticket. Indian Railways sets fares by class and by train type, not by nationality, so Indian and foreign passengers pay the same railway fare for the same seat.

• Adults pay the full fare for the class they choose.
• Children get the railway child rules. A small child may travel free or at a reduced fare depending on age and whether the child takes a separate seat. Confirm the current child rule on IRCTC when you book.
• The three toy train lines run different services: the short scenic "joy ride," and the longer point to point journeys. Each has its own fare.

• An IRCTC account. You register once with your name, email, and mobile number.
• A photo identity document for each adult passenger, to carry on the train. Foreign passengers should carry a passport.
• The station names and your travel date.
• An online payment method (card, net banking, or UPI).

• Go to www.irctc.co.in or open the IRCTC Rail Connect app.
• Create a free account and verify your email and mobile.
• In the journey search, enter your start station and end station, your date, and the class.
• For the Darjeeling joy ride, search using Darjeeling as the boarding station. The round trip joy ride is listed as its own service. Confirm the exact train number and station codes on IRCTC.
• Pick the toy train service you want. Choose steam or diesel where both run, and choose a Vistadome coach if it is offered.
• Enter each passenger's name, age, and gender.
• Pay online and download the electronic ticket.
• Carry the ticket and a photo identity on the day.

If online booking is confusing, you can book the same seat at any railway computerized reservation counter for the same fare.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (West Bengal). This is the most famous toy train. The short "joy ride" runs from Darjeeling to Ghum and back. Ghum is a very high railway station and has a small railway museum. The joy ride halts at the Batasia Loop, where on a clear day you see the Kanchenjunga range. The full line links New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri with Darjeeling, though sections can close after landslides. Both steam and diesel services run, and Vistadome coaches with large windows are offered on some services.

Kalka to Shimla Railway (Himachal Pradesh). This narrow gauge line climbs from Kalka to Shimla through many tunnels and bridges. Several services run, from basic trains to premium coaches. You book by choosing Kalka and Shimla as your stations on IRCTC.

Nilgiri Mountain Railway (Tamil Nadu). This is the only rack railway of the three. It climbs from Mettupalayam to Coonoor and on to Udagamandalam (Ooty). The lower steam-hauled section is the star of the ride. You book by choosing Mettupalayam, Coonoor, or Ooty as your stations on IRCTC.

Fares depend on the line, the class (first class or chair car), and the service type. Steam services usually cost more than diesel services because steam engines cost more to run. Vistadome coaches usually cost more than standard coaches. The short joy rides are priced separately from the long point to point journeys.

Do not trust a fare from a blog. Prices and train numbers change. Confirm the exact fare and train for your date on IRCTC (last checked September 2026).

• The Darjeeling joy ride runs several times a day, and the railway adds extra rides in the peak season. The number of daily rides drops in the low season.
• The Kalka to Shimla and Nilgiri services run to fixed timetables that you see on IRCTC when you search.
• Monsoon landslides can suspend hill services at short notice on all three lines.
• Confirm the current timetable and any suspension on IRCTC before you travel (last checked September 2026).

• Book as early as the railway allows. The advance booking window for Indian Railways is limited, so book on the first day it opens for your date. Confirm the current window on IRCTC.
• The short joy rides are the hardest to get. Book the moment booking opens.
• Travel on a weekday and in the shoulder season for a calmer ride and easier seats.
• Choose the outward morning ride for the best light and clearer mountain views.
• If online seats are gone, check a railway reservation counter, and check for last minute cancellations closer to the date.

• Darjeeling: reach New Jalpaiguri (NJP) by train or Bagdogra by air, then drive up to Darjeeling. Stay in Darjeeling town near the Mall and Chowrasta.
• Shimla: reach Kalka by train from Delhi or Chandigarh, then take the toy train up, or drive. Stay near the Mall Road in Shimla.
• Ooty: reach Mettupalayam or Coimbatore, then take the toy train up, or drive. Stay in Ooty or nearby Coonoor.

Each hill town has hotels in every budget. Book rooms early in the peak summer season.

• Carry your IRCTC ticket and a photo identity document for each adult.
• Reach the station well before departure. Hill platforms are small and boarding is quick.
• Carry warm clothing. The hills are cold, and the toy train coaches are open to the weather.
• Do not lean out of the coach or stand on the footboard. The line has sharp curves and tunnels.
• Follow the railway rules on luggage. Space in toy train coaches is small.
