Located at the historical town of Puhar (or Poompuhar or Kaveri Poompattinam) is the Poompuhar Beach admired for its black sand and great heritage value. The entire stretch of the beach promises heart-warming serenity which is worth enjoying with your family. Centuries ago, Poompuhar served as the royal capital and port for the Chola Dynasty and was the biggest port on the east coast of India.

The beach is a spectator to the amazing sight of River Kaveri (or Cauvery) merging with the sea. Another remarkable attraction of the beach is the Silappathikara Art Gallery, a 7-storey building marvellously depicting the scenes from the great epic of the same name. The beach is also home to an ancient sculpture portraying bathing scene. Other attractions in the close vicinity include the Temple of Thirupallavaneesvaram and Zion Church. The beach is not safe for swimming.
