- October to March for wildlife and cool weatherThe best time to visit Dandeli is roughly October to March, the cool, pleasant season after the monsoon, ideal for wildlife safaris, birdwatching and the river activities, with green forests and comfortable weather. This is the classic and most rewarding season, especially for the birding, including the famous hornbills, and for spotting wildlife in the Kali Tiger Reserve. For most travellers, these cool months are the clear choice for a Dandeli trip.
- Summer rafting with the dam releaseUnusually, river rafting on the Kali can run even into the summer months, roughly March to June, because the water comes from releases from the Supa dam upstream rather than only the rains, so the rafting season is long. The summer is hotter, but the river adventures continue. If rafting is your main goal, this longer season is a bonus, though the cooler months remain more comfortable for the wildlife and the forest as well as the water.
- Avoid the heavy monsoonThe monsoon, about June to September, brings very heavy rain to this Western Ghats forest, and many activities, including rafting, coracle rides and safaris, are suspended for safety, though the forest is at its lush, green, dramatic best. Come in the monsoon only if you want the green scenery and can accept that the adventures and the wildlife viewing are largely off. For the full Dandeli experience of river and jungle, avoid the heavy monsoon months.
- Check activities before you goBecause Dandeli's rafting depends on the dam release and its safaris and activities on the season and the weather, always check what is running before you travel, and confirm with your resort or operator. The exact rafting window and the safari timings vary through the year and with the water and the rains. A quick check of the current activity status avoids arriving to find your hoped-for adventure suspended, especially around the monsoon shoulders.
Cool season for wildlife, longer season for raftingDandeli is at its best in the cool, pleasant months of about October to March for wildlife, birding and comfortable weather, while river rafting on the Kali can run longer, even into the summer, thanks to the Supa dam release. Avoid the heavy monsoon of about June to September, when rafting and safaris are suspended though the forest is green. Always check which activities are running before you travel, as the rafting window and safaris vary through the year.

03What to see
The river, the tiger reserve and the wonders around
The draws are the Kali river adventures, the Kali Tiger Reserve and its birds and wildlife, and the Syntheri Rocks and caves.
- The Kali river and its adventuresThe heart of Dandeli is the Kali river, rushing green through the forest, and its adventures: white-water rafting through the rapids, one of the best in South India, along with kayaking, coracle rides in the round basket boats, and canoeing. To ride the Kali's rapids, or drift quietly in a coracle watching for birds and crocodiles on the banks, is the signature Dandeli experience, and the reason many come. The river, in all its moods, is the soul of the place.
- The Kali Tiger Reserve and wildlifeDandeli lies within the Kali Tiger Reserve, one of Karnataka's largest protected forests, home to tigers, leopards, the rare black panther, elephants, gaur, deer and sloth bears, among the rich wildlife of the Western Ghats. Tigers and panthers are elusive and sightings a matter of luck, but a jungle safari or a night drive through the forest is exciting and rewarding, with a good chance of deer, gaur, monkeys and birds, and the thrill of the wild jungle all around.
- The birds and the hornbillsDandeli is a paradise for birdwatchers, with around 270 or more bird species recorded, and is especially famous for its hornbills, the great hornbill and the Malabar pied hornbill among them, magnificent birds seen in the tall forest. Bring binoculars and take a birding walk or a coracle ride at dawn, and you may see hornbills, kingfishers, woodpeckers and many more. For birders, Dandeli is one of the finest and most rewarding destinations in southern India.
- Syntheri Rocks, caves and viewpointsAround Dandeli lie natural wonders worth exploring: the Syntheri Rocks, a giant granite monolith towering above a stream deep in the forest, alive with rock bees and birds; the limestone Kavala caves with a natural rock shivling; the great Supa dam and its reservoir; the Ulavi temple; and viewpoints such as Sykes Point over the Kali valley. These forest sights, reached by drives and short walks, round out the river and wildlife with the wild beauty of the Ghats.
A protected tiger reserve to respectDandeli is not just an adventure park but a protected tiger reserve and a fragile Western Ghats forest and river, so treat it with real respect: do not litter or pollute the Kali or the forest, keep noise down, do not feed or disturb wildlife, follow the reserve's rules on safaris and trails, and choose responsible, eco-minded operators. This rich wildlife habitat is easily harmed. Treading lightly and respecting the reserve keeps Dandeli's wild beauty alive for the future.
04Things to do
The experiences that make Dandeli
Go river rafting, take a jungle safari, watch for hornbills, and try the coracle rides and other adventures.
- Go white-water rafting on the KaliThe signature Dandeli experience is white-water rafting on the Kali river, riding the rapids through the forest, one of the best rafting runs in South India, thrilling but generally suited to beginners and families with a good operator. Wear your life jacket, listen to the guide, and enjoy the mix of exciting rapids and calm stretches. For most visitors the rafting is the highlight of Dandeli, a great introduction to river adventure in a beautiful Ghats setting.
- Take a jungle safariTake a jungle safari or a night drive through the Kali Tiger Reserve, into the wild Western Ghats forest, watching for wildlife: while tigers and the rare black panther are elusive, you have a good chance of deer, gaur, monkeys, birds and the thrill of the jungle, and always the possibility of something special. Go with the official or resort safari, at dawn or dusk when animals are active, and enjoy the excitement and beauty of the wild forest around the river.
- Watch for hornbills and birdsGive time to the birding, for which Dandeli is famous: take a dawn birding walk or a quiet coracle ride with binoculars, and watch for the magnificent hornbills, the great and Malabar pied hornbills, along with kingfishers, woodpeckers and many of the 270-odd species recorded here. A knowledgeable guide greatly helps. For birdwatchers it is a highlight, and even for casual visitors, seeing a great hornbill fly across the forest is an unforgettable Dandeli moment.
- Try the coracle, kayak and moreBeyond rafting and safaris, Dandeli offers a range of gentler and other adventures: a coracle ride in a round basket boat drifting on the Kali, kayaking, canoeing, zip-lining, nature trails and cycling, based at the resorts, suiting families and those wanting a milder thrill. Mix a coracle ride and a nature walk with the rafting and safari for a full, varied few days. There is something for every level of adventure at Dandeli, on the river and in the forest.
Use safe, licensed operators for the riverRiver activities carry real risk, so use only safe, reputable and licensed operators for rafting, kayaking and coracle rides: check that they provide proper life jackets and helmets for rafting, brief you on safety, and have experienced guides, and do not take the water lightly or skip the safety gear, however calm it looks. Keep a close eye on children. With a good operator and the right precautions, the Kali river adventures are safe as well as thrilling.
- Jungle resorts along the KaliDandeli's classic stay is a jungle resort or camp along the Kali river or in the forest, from simple tented camps to comfortable eco-resorts, which arrange the rafting, safaris, birding and other activities as packages, often including meals. Staying in the forest by the river, waking to birdsong, is the heart of the Dandeli experience. Choose a reputable, eco-minded resort that runs its activities safely, and book ahead in the peak season and on weekends.
- Choose a responsible resortBecause Dandeli is a protected tiger reserve, choose a responsible, eco-minded resort that respects the forest and river, runs its rafting and safaris safely and legally, and does not harm the wildlife, over the cheapest package with a poor record. Check reviews and what is included. A good resort makes the difference between a safe, rewarding, responsible trip and a disappointing or unsafe one, so it is worth a little research to pick the right base among the many along the Kali.
- Give Dandeli two to three daysDandeli rewards about two to three days, enough to enjoy the rafting and the river adventures, a jungle safari, a birding walk and the nearby Syntheri Rocks, caves and viewpoints, without rushing. A single overnight feels hurried; a couple of unhurried days let you mix the river, the jungle and the sights. Do not try to squeeze all of Dandeli's adventures into one day; give it the time to enjoy both the water and the wild forest properly.
- Fit it into a Karnataka or Goa tripPlan Dandeli within a wider trip rather than alone: as an adventure and jungle add-on to a Goa beach holiday, about 120 to 125 km away, or within a Karnataka circuit with the coast, Hampi, the Ghats and beyond. Weaving Dandeli into a Goa or Karnataka trip turns a lone adventure stop into a richer journey, blending river and jungle with beaches, heritage and hills, one of the most varied and rewarding regions in southern India to explore.
A responsible jungle resort is the baseThe way to enjoy Dandeli is to stay at a reputable, eco-minded jungle resort or camp along the Kali that arranges the rafting, safaris and birding safely and respects the tiger reserve, over the cheapest package with a poor record; check reviews and what is included, and book ahead in the busy seasons. Give Dandeli two to three days for the river, the jungle and the sights, and pair it with Goa or a wider Karnataka trip for a fuller journey.
06What it costs
A gentle guide to the cost of a Dandeli trip
Dandeli is affordable; the main costs are the transport, the resort package, and the activities you choose.
- Resort packages set the budgetMost travellers do Dandeli as a resort package that bundles the stay, meals and a set of activities, so the package, more than anything, sets the budget, and there is a wide range from simple, cheap camps to comfortable eco-resorts. Choose the level of comfort and the activities you want, and compare what is included. It is the resort package, plus the transport to reach Dandeli, that makes up the main cost of a trip for most visitors.
- Activities and safarisThe rafting, safaris, coracle rides and other activities may be included in a package or charged separately, so check, and budget a little extra for any you add, such as an extra safari or a birding guide. Choose safe, licensed operators over the cheapest. The jungle safaris in the reserve carry official fees. Budget for the activities you most want, and the range of adventures at Dandeli can be enjoyed at a reasonable cost, especially bundled in a package.
- Getting thereThe transport to reach Dandeli, a car or taxi from Hubli or Goa, or the train to Hubli and a transfer, is the other main cost, and a shared car or a group split keeps it reasonable. Many resorts arrange transfers as part of the package. For those adding Dandeli to a Goa trip, the road transfer is an easy extra. It is the travel and the resort package, more than the activities alone, that shape the budget for most trips.
- Carry some cashCarry enough cash for any extra activities, tips, food outside the resort and small buys, as Dandeli and the forest resorts have limited card facilities, though Hubli and the bigger resorts may take cards. Draw cash in Hubli or a larger town before you come. As at many forest and adventure destinations, a little cash in hand for the everyday keeps a Dandeli trip smooth, even where the main package is paid in advance by card.
07Good to know
Practical tips: the season, the safety and the forest
A few facts help: check the activity season, use safe operators, respect the tiger reserve, and come prepared for the forest.
- Check the activity seasonPlan around the seasons and the activities: October to March is best for wildlife, birding and cool weather, rafting can run into the summer with the dam release, and the heavy monsoon, June to September, suspends most activities. Always check with your resort or operator what is running before you travel, as the rafting window, the safaris and the water levels vary through the year. Confirming the activities in advance avoids arriving to find your hoped-for adventure closed.
- Use safe, licensed operatorsFor the river activities, rafting, kayaking, coracle rides, use only safe, reputable and licensed operators who provide proper life jackets and helmets, brief you on safety and have experienced guides, and never skip the safety gear however calm the water looks. Choose a responsible resort with a good safety record. River adventures carry real risk, and a good operator is the key to enjoying them safely. Do not compromise on safety for the sake of a cheaper package.
- Respect the tiger reserveDandeli is a protected tiger reserve and fragile forest, so respect it: do not litter or pollute the Kali or the forest, keep noise down, do not feed or disturb wildlife, follow the reserve's rules on safaris and trails, and choose eco-minded operators. Take nothing and leave nothing. This is a rich but fragile wildlife habitat, and treating it with care and respect, rather than as a mere playground, keeps Dandeli's forests and river alive for the future.
- Come prepared for the forestCome prepared for a Western Ghats forest: carry insect repellent, especially for leeches and mosquitoes in and after the rains, light long clothing, good shoes, sun and rain protection depending on the season, any personal medicines, and enough cash. Quick-drying clothes help for the river. A little preparation for the jungle, the river and the weather makes a Dandeli trip comfortable, in a beautiful but wild and sometimes wet forest setting far from town comforts.
Check the season, choose safe operators, respect the forestThree things make a good Dandeli trip: check the activity season and confirm what is running before you travel, as rafting depends on the dam release and the monsoon suspends most activities; use only safe, licensed operators with proper gear for the river adventures; and respect the protected tiger reserve, not littering, disturbing wildlife or choosing irresponsible operators. Come prepared for the forest with repellent and the right clothing, and Dandeli is a safe, thrilling and responsible adventure.
08Adventure sense
Safety at Dandeli
Dandeli is safe with care; the cares are the river activities, the wildlife and forest, the leeches, and the operators you choose.
- Take the river seriouslyThe main safety point at Dandeli is the river: rafting, kayaking and coracle rides carry real risk, so use only safe, licensed operators, always wear the life jacket and helmet provided, listen carefully to the guide's safety briefing, do not stand up in or jump from the boat, and keep children close and supervised. Do not swim in the strong current. The Kali is beautiful but powerful, and treated with respect and a good operator, the river adventures are safe as well as exciting.
- Respect the wildlife and forestOn safaris and forest trails, respect the wild animals and follow the guide and the reserve's rules: stay in the vehicle on safaris, do not get out near or approach wildlife, keep quiet, do not feed animals, and remember this is a real tiger reserve with elephants, bears and other potentially dangerous animals. Do not wander into the forest alone. With sensible caution and the guides, the wildlife and forest are a thrilling and safe part of a Dandeli visit.
- Mind the leeches and insectsIn and after the rains, the Western Ghats forest has leeches and plenty of mosquitoes and other insects, so carry insect repellent, wear light long clothing and closed shoes on forest walks, check for leeches, and take anti-malarial precautions if advised. These are more a nuisance than a danger with preparation. Coming ready for the forest insects, especially in the wetter months, keeps a Dandeli trip comfortable, and lets you enjoy the jungle without the bother.
- Choose operators and the ordinary careThe biggest single safety factor at Dandeli is the operator and resort you choose, so pick a reputable, responsible one with a good safety record over the cheapest package. Beyond this, take the usual care of belongings, carry any medicines, and note that the nearest full medical facilities are in Hubli. Solo travellers, including women, generally find Dandeli safe at a good resort with normal precautions. With safe operators and sensible care, Dandeli is a thrilling and safe adventure destination.
09Who it suits
Dandeli for every kind of traveller
Dandeli suits adventure seekers, wildlife and birdwatchers, families and nature lovers, with a little care over the operators and season.
- Adventure and rafting seekersFor adventure seekers, Dandeli is a top destination, with white-water rafting on the Kali, kayaking, coracle rides, zip-lining and jungle safaris, all in a beautiful Western Ghats setting and with an unusually long rafting season thanks to the dam. For those who want an accessible, exciting adventure break in the jungle, especially from Goa or Bangalore, Dandeli is one of South India's best.
- Wildlife and birdwatchersFor wildlife lovers and, above all, birdwatchers, Dandeli is a paradise, a Kali Tiger Reserve rich in wildlife, with around 270 or more bird species and the famous hornbills the great draw. Take safaris and birding walks with a good guide, and enjoy the wild Ghats forest, though the big cats are elusive. For birders especially, Dandeli is one of the finest destinations in southern India, and for all nature lovers a rewarding, wild and beautiful jungle experience.
- Families and weekendersFor families and weekenders from Goa and Bangalore, Dandeli is a great, accessible getaway, with gentle rafting, coracle rides, nature walks and jungle stays that children love, alongside the wilder adventures. Choose a good family-friendly resort, use safe operators, keep children close on the river and in the forest, and it is a wholesome, exciting trip. For a family adventure and wildlife break in the jungle, easy to reach and full of activities, Dandeli is hard to beat.
- Nature and jungle-stay loversFor nature lovers who want to be immersed in the forest, Dandeli offers wonderful jungle stays by the Kali, the sounds of the wild, birding at dawn, gentle nature trails and the beauty of the Western Ghats, at a slower pace than the adrenaline crowd. Choose an eco-minded resort and mix quiet walks and coracle rides with the odd safari. For those who love simply being in a wild, green forest by a river, Dandeli is a deeply restful and rewarding retreat.
10A sensible plan
A suggested plan around Dandeli
A graded plan: Dandeli's river, jungle and sights, with Goa or Karnataka over about two to four days.
- Day 1: arrive and the riverArrive at Dandeli, from Hubli or Goa, and settle into your jungle resort by the Kali. Give the first day to the river: go white-water rafting through the rapids with a safe operator, and perhaps a gentle coracle ride in the evening, watching for birds and the sunset on the water. This exciting first day on the Kali, the heart of Dandeli, sets the tone, and a night at a forest resort by the river is a lovely introduction to the jungle.
- Day 2: safari and birdingRise early for a jungle safari or a birding walk in the Kali Tiger Reserve, watching for the famous hornbills and other birds, deer, gaur and, with luck, something rarer, in the cool of dawn when the forest is alive. Spend the rest of the day on more birding, a nature trail, or another river activity, at a relaxed pace. It is a rich day of wildlife and forest, the other great side of Dandeli beyond the river adventures.
- Day 3: Syntheri Rocks and the sightsGive the third day to the natural wonders around Dandeli: the towering Syntheri Rocks by their forest stream, the limestone Kavala caves with their natural shivling, the great Supa dam and reservoir, and viewpoints such as Sykes Point over the Kali valley. These forest drives and short walks round out the river and wildlife with the wild beauty of the Ghats. It is a gentler, scenic day, a fine finish to a Dandeli adventure before you move on.
- Pair with Goa or KarnatakaWeave Dandeli into a wider trip: as a jungle-and-river add-on to a Goa beach holiday, about 120 to 125 km away, or within a Karnataka circuit with the coast, Hampi, the Ghats and beyond. Over about two to four days for Dandeli, plus onward travel, this makes a varied and rewarding southern India journey, blending river adventure and wildlife with beaches, heritage and hills, one of the most exciting and beautiful combinations in the region.
- How do I get there, and when to go?Reach Dandeli by road, about 74 km from Hubli, its nearest airport and railway, or about 120 to 125 km from Goa, a popular add-on. The best time is October to March for wildlife, birding and cool weather, while rafting can run into the summer with the Supa dam release; the heavy monsoon, June to September, suspends most activities. Always check what is running before you travel, and stay at a good jungle resort that arranges the adventures.
- When can I go rafting, and is it safe?River rafting on the Kali can run for much of the year, even into the summer, because the water comes from releases at the Supa dam, though it is suspended in the heavy monsoon; check the current status before you go. Rafting is generally suited to beginners and families with a good operator, but carries real risk, so use only safe, licensed operators, always wear the life jacket and helmet, and follow the guide. With that care, the rafting is safe and thrilling.
- What wildlife can I see, and will I see a tiger?Dandeli lies in the Kali Tiger Reserve, home to tigers, leopards, the rare black panther, elephants, gaur, deer and bears, and is famous for birds, with around 270 or more species and the magnificent hornbills. But tigers and panthers are elusive, and sightings are a matter of luck, so come for the whole jungle experience, the birds, the smaller wildlife and the forest, rather than expecting a tiger. A safari is exciting for the thrill and the chance, not a guarantee.
- Is Dandeli good for families, and how long to stay?Dandeli is a great family adventure destination, with gentle rafting, coracle rides, nature walks and jungle stays children love, alongside wilder activities, provided you use safe operators and keep children close on the river and in the forest. Give Dandeli about two to three days to enjoy the river, a safari, the birding and the nearby Syntheri Rocks and caves without rushing. Paired with Goa or a Karnataka trip, it makes a rewarding family adventure and wildlife break.
12For NRIs and OCIs
Planning Dandeli from abroad
For overseas visitors, Dandeli is a Western Ghats river-and-jungle adventure easily added to Goa, reached through Goa or Hubli.
- Route in through Goa or HubliFrom abroad, fly into Goa, from where Dandeli is about 120 to 125 km, or via Hubli, about 74 km away, or on a wider Karnataka trip. No permit is needed. Allow two to three days for Dandeli, easily added to a Goa holiday for a jungle-and-river break from the beaches. Goa and Hubli are the natural gateways, and the drive over the Ghats into the forest is a scenic and rewarding excursion for a visitor from abroad seeking adventure and wildlife.
- An easy jungle add-on to GoaFor an overseas visitor, especially one holidaying in Goa, Dandeli is a superb and easy add-on, a few days of white-water rafting, jungle safaris and birding in the Western Ghats, a refreshing change from the beaches. It is accessible, exciting and rich in wildlife, with famous hornbills and a real tiger reserve. Combined with Goa or a wider Karnataka trip, it gives an overseas visitor a taste of India's wild forests and rivers alongside the coast, a rewarding contrast.
- Come in the right season, use safe operatorsTime an overseas trip for the cool season of about October to March for the best wildlife and weather, though rafting runs longer, and avoid the heavy monsoon when activities are suspended. Crucially, use only safe, reputable, licensed operators for the river adventures, with proper gear, and choose a responsible eco-resort. Checking the season and the activity status, and choosing a good, safe operator, is the key to a rewarding and safe Dandeli trip from abroad.
- Respect the tiger reserveOverseas visitors should treat Dandeli as the protected tiger reserve and fragile forest it is: do not litter or pollute the river or forest, do not disturb or feed wildlife, follow the reserve's rules, and choose eco-minded operators. Coming with respect for the environment and care in this wild forest, an overseas visitor enjoys Dandeli responsibly and helps preserve its rivers, forests and wildlife.
13Practical for visitors from abroad
Money, connectivity and timing for overseas visitors
Carry some cash, expect patchy connectivity in the forest, come in the right season, and pair Dandeli with Goa or Karnataka.
- Carry some cashCarry enough Indian rupees in cash for extra activities, tips, food and small buys, as Dandeli and the forest resorts have limited card facilities, though the bigger resorts and Hubli may take cards and packages are often paid in advance. Draw cash in Goa or Hubli before you come. For an overseas visitor, a mix of cash for the everyday and a card or advance payment for the resort package is the smoothest way to handle money in this forest destination.
- Expect patchy connectivityMobile coverage can be patchy in the forest and at the resorts around Dandeli, and foreign SIMs may not work well, so download maps and details in advance, get an Indian prepaid SIM for the trip, and tell your resort your plans. Treat the disconnection as part of the jungle escape. Do not rely on a strong signal deep in the forest, and confirm your booking and activities in advance rather than depending on connectivity at the resort.
- Come in the right seasonPlan the trip for the cool season of about October to March for the best wildlife, birding and weather, though rafting runs longer into the summer, and avoid the heavy monsoon, when most activities are suspended. Come prepared for the forest with repellent and the right clothing. Timing an overseas trip for the right season, and checking the activity status, is the key to enjoying the full range of Dandeli's river and jungle adventures.
- Pair with Goa or KarnatakaFor an overseas visitor, Dandeli is best enjoyed as an add-on to Goa, about 120 to 125 km away, or within a wider Karnataka trip with the coast, Hampi and the Ghats. An operator or a self-drive itinerary can easily weave the river adventures, the wildlife and the forest into a rewarding southern India journey. Rather than a lone stop, treat Dandeli as an exciting jungle-and-river jewel of a wider Goa or Karnataka trip from abroad.
14For visitors from within India

- A top river-and-jungle adventureFor travellers from within India, Dandeli is one of the best river-and-jungle adventure destinations in the south, with white-water rafting on the Kali, jungle safaris in a real tiger reserve, famous hornbills and birding, and forest wonders like the Syntheri Rocks, all in the beautiful Western Ghats. - Do the river and the jungle bothMake the most of Dandeli by doing both its great sides: the river, rafting, coracle rides and kayaking on the Kali, and the jungle, safaris and birding in the Kali Tiger Reserve, with the hornbills and the forest wonders. Over two to three days, mixing the adrenaline of the river with the wildlife and calm of the forest gives the fullest Dandeli experience, far more than a single rushed activity, in one of the loveliest corners of the Ghats.
- Choose safe operators and the right seasonUse only safe, reputable, licensed operators for the river activities, with proper life jackets and helmets, and choose a responsible eco-resort over the cheapest package, as the operator is the key to a safe trip. Come in the cool season of about October to March for the best wildlife and weather, checking the rafting and safari status, as the monsoon suspends most activities. Getting the operator and the season right ensures a safe and rewarding Dandeli adventure.
- Respect the tiger reserveTreat Dandeli as the protected tiger reserve and fragile forest it is: do not litter or pollute the Kali or the forest, do not disturb or feed wildlife, keep noise down, follow the reserve's rules, and choose eco-minded operators. This rich wildlife habitat is easily harmed, and it is our responsibility to protect it. Setting an example and treading lightly helps keep Dandeli's rivers, forests and wildlife alive for the many adventurers and nature lovers who will come after.

Where the Kali runs greenWhite water, tall forests, and the great birds of the Ghats
Deep in the Western Ghats of northern Karnataka, in the old timber country of Uttara Kannada, the Kali river comes rushing down out of the hills, green and cold and strong, through some of the finest forest left in southern India, and on its banks stands the little town of Dandeli. It is a place of two great pleasures, water and wilderness. The water is the Kali itself, and because a dam upstream lets its flow out through much of the year, the river offers white-water rafting for far longer than the monsoon alone would allow, so that travellers come to ride its rapids, to drift in the round basket-boats called coracles watching for kingfishers and the long snouts of crocodiles on the banks, and to kayak and swim in its quieter pools. And the wilderness is the great forest all around, for Dandeli lies in the heart of the Kali Tiger Reserve, one of the largest protected forests in the state, where tigers and the rare, shadow-black panther move unseen among the trees, where elephants and gaur and sloth bears wander, and where, above all, the birds are extraordinary: nearly three hundred kinds have been counted here, and the tall trees are home to the hornbills, the great and the pied, huge and improbable birds with their heavy casqued bills, sailing across the canopy like something from an older world. To spend a few days at Dandeli, riding the Kali by day and listening to the forest at night, watching for a hornbill at dawn, is to taste both the thrill of the river and the deep, patient wildness of the Ghats, and to remember that beside its beaches and its cities, this coast keeps great forests still.
