Introduction

Located in Thrissur district in Kerala, Thiruvilwamala is a small temple town that is located on the banks of Bharathappuzha River. It is well known for its ancient Sree Rama temple and the nearby Punarjani Caves, which is thought to relieve those people who cross the caves off all their sins. It is known more as a pilgrim centre than a tourist destination. There are not many restaurants in the village of Thiruvilwamala and it is recommended to eat at hotels in the neat town of Ottapalam. There are a few village tea stalls where homely meals, local breakfast items and snack are served.

Thiruvilwamala can be reached by road. It takes around 35 minutes from Alathur in Palakkad district. There are private buses and taxi services. The nearest railheads are at Ottapalam (13 km.) and Thrissur (around 50 km.). Those traveling by air can reach the closest airports at Cochin (91 km.) and Calicut (around 90 km.). The village of Thiruvilwamala can be easily explored on foot. You can also hire auto rickshaws or taxis to move around.

Some of the must visit places around this pretty village include the following: Kuthampully: It is the handloom weaver’s village located on the banks of the River Nila from where the handlooms are exported worldwide. These are woven mostly by the members of Devanga community hailing originally from Mysore State, who were brought to Kerala by Cochin Royal Family some 500 years ago for the exclusive palace requirement. In September 2011, the Kuthampully Saree got exclusive Intellectual Property rights through Geographical indication Act. Lakkidi: A quaint village in Palakkad district, which is famous for being the birth place of Kunchan Nambiar, one of the greatest poets in Malayalam and the exponent of the temple art form of Ottam thullal. The poet's house, which has been preserved as a monument by the State Government attracts lot of tourists from around the world.
