Balasore

Balasore, also known as Baleswar, is a town located in the state of Orissa (Odisha) in Eastern India. The coastal city is located in the region better known as Chandipur Beach. A popular tourist destination, this town has the reminiscences of British India. This old town is exclusively scenic and has some of the most beautiful temples, historical places, tombs and hillocks. The eye soothing green paddy fields is a real visionary treat at this place which also serves as the headquarters of Balasore district. According to our tourist guide, some of the best tourist sites in Balasore are: Chandipur Beach: This sea beach in Balasore is one of the finest beaches of the country.The waters here recede 5 km. offshore every day and proceeds rhythmically after a regular interval. The sea beach can be reached by bus from Balasore. Bhujakhia Pir: Standing erect in the middle of the city, it is a popular tourist attraction. It is actually the tomb of the Sufi Saint Aasthana Sharif Hazrat. Adjacent to it is Baba Bhujakhira Pir shrine that symbolizes harmony and peace between Hindus and Muslims. During the occasion of Urs, this Pir is visited by hordes of tourists. Khirochora Gopinatha Temple: This temple was built by the great King Langula Narasimha Dev who had also constructed the famous Konark Temple. It is an active seat for Vaishnavite Culture. Balasore is particularly famous for its tasty sweet called rasgullas. Popular sweet corners of the town are Mahi Rasagolla and Jagadathri Sweets (known for pantuas/ gulab jamun). Balasore also boasts of chhena poda (fried/burnt cheese in sugar). The nearest airport to Balasore is at Bhubaneswar (about 200 km. away), offering good air connectivity to many Indian cities. Taxis from the airport are the convenient modes to reach Balasore. The town boasts of excellent road and rail connectivity. It is well connected by its own rail head to several cities such as New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Puri, Bhubaneswar and Jaipur. The mention of Raibania is even found in the historical book ‘Ain-i-Akbari.’ It houses scattered ruins of once glorious forts and is surrounded by the forest of Jayachandi. Aradi (about 110 km.): Also known as “sacred Ganges of Orissa”, this place is located on the bank of the River Vaitarani. Aradi has a Saiva shrine of Lord Akhandalamani that is visited by hundreds of pilgrims every day. Panchalingeswar (about 25 km.): Panchalingeswar is located on a hillock near Nilagiri.
