01Season

When to visit Chidambaram, and the temple sessions

The best months are October to March, pleasant for the temple and the Pichavaram boat. The thing to plan is the timing: the temple opens in two sessions, morning and evening.

  • October to March: comfortableThe pleasant season for the temple and the mangrove boat, with cool mornings ideal for darshan. The peak for visitors, and the dance festival falls in this window.
  • Time the two sessionsThe temple is open about 6 am to 12 pm and again 5 pm to 10 pm, so plan a morning or evening darshan and fill the long midday and late-afternoon gap with a meal, a rest, or the Pichavaram boat.
  • The festivalsThe Natyanjali Dance Festival, around February or March near Maha Shivaratri, and Arudra Darshan in Margazhi (around December or January) are the temple's great occasions, beautiful but busy, so plan around them.
Morning or evening, not midday

Unlike many temples, Chidambaram runs in two clear sessions (about 6 am to 12 pm and 5 pm to 10 pm), with a long closed gap in between. Plan your darshan for one of these, and use the gap for Pichavaram or a rest. The signature section explains the temple's deep meaning.

  • By road, on the coastal routeChidambaram is about 70 km from Pondicherry and on the road to the Kumbakonam temple delta, so it slots neatly into a coastal temple loop. We arrange a car and driver for the temple and Pichavaram.

Fly into Chennai, then drive down the coast via Pondicherry, or up from the delta. Chidambaram is the space element of the Pancha Bhoota temples.

From the Gulf and Southeast Asia

Fly into Chennai or Trichy and continue by road. Chidambaram pairs with Pondicherry and the Kumbakonam delta for a temple-and-coast trip.

03The temple and the mangroves

The Nataraja temple, and Pichavaram

Chidambaram's heart is the great Nataraja temple, and just down the road lies one of the world's largest mangrove forests.

  • The Thillai Nataraja templeThe home of the cosmic dancer and the space element of the Pancha Bhoota temples, with its golden hall, the 1000-pillar mandapam and the Chidambara Rahasyam. Open about 6 am to 12 pm and 5 pm to 10 pm, general darshan free, run by the hereditary Dikshitar priests.
  • The golden hall and the danceNataraja dances in the Chit Sabha, the golden hall, in the form known the world over from Chola bronze. Look for the symbolism in the gold roof and the carvings of the classical dance poses.
  • Pichavaram mangrovesAbout 15 km away, the second-largest mangrove forest in the world, where a boat ride threads the green water channels and the birdlife. The boat house is a 30 to 40 minute drive, lovely in the cool morning.
Dress, darshan and the priests

Dress modestly, leave footwear outside, and keep silence in the shrine. General darshan is free; abhishekams and sevas are arranged at the temple counter. The Dikshitar priests perform the rituals in their traditional way. The next section unfolds the meaning of the temple.

04The cosmic dance

Nataraja, the space element and the secret

Chidambaram is the most philosophical of the great temples: the home of the cosmic dance, the element of space, and the famous Chidambara Rahasyam, the secret of the formless.

  • The element of spaceOf the five Pancha Bhoota temples, Chidambaram is Akasha, space or ether, the subtlest element. Where the others have a lingam of stone, water or fire, here the divine is the formless space itself, the crown of the five-temple journey.
  • The Chidambara RahasyamBehind a curtain in the sanctum there is no idol, only an empty, garlanded space, the 'secret of Chidambaram'. It teaches that the divine is everywhere, even in emptiness, a profound moment when the curtain is drawn at the pooja.
  • Nataraja and the Ananda TandavaThe presiding form is Nataraja, Shiva as the cosmic dancer performing the Ananda Tandava, the dance of bliss that creates and dissolves the universe, the very image cast in the famous Chola bronzes.
  • See a poojaTry to be there for one of the six daily poojas, when the Dikshitar priests perform the rituals and the curtain of the Rahasyam is drawn. It is the heart of a Chidambaram visit.
05Dance and mangroves

The dance festival, the mangroves and the delta

Around the temple, Chidambaram offers a world-famous dance festival, a vast mangrove forest, and the gateway to the temple delta.

  • The Natyanjali Dance FestivalIf you visit around February or March, the Natyanjali festival fills the temple with classical dancers from across India and the world, offering their art to Nataraja. A magical convergence of the temple and the dance it gave the world.
  • Boat the Pichavaram mangrovesTake a boat through the green channels of the second-largest mangrove forest on earth, gliding under the arching roots with the birds overhead. Go in the cool morning, and choose a rowboat for the quiet narrow channels.
  • On to the deltaChidambaram is the gateway to the temple delta: Vaitheeswaran Koil (a Navagraha temple), Sirkazhi and on to Kumbakonam lie beyond, while Pondicherry is an easy run up the coast.
  • Eat simple and freshThe town has good vegetarian meals halls and filter coffee. Eat at busy, clean places and drink bottled or filtered water in the heat.
06Common mistakes

Mistakes to avoid in Chidambaram

Chidambaram is welcoming, but a little planning makes the most of it.

  • Do not arrive between the sessionsThe temple shuts in a long gap after midday before reopening about 5 pm. Plan a morning or evening darshan, and use the gap for Pichavaram or a rest.
  • Do not feel pressured at the RahasyamThe drawing of the curtain is a sacred moment; agree any abhishekam or seva at the temple counter in advance, and do not feel pushed into a large donation on the spot.
  • Do not rush Pichavaram in the heatThe mangrove boat is best in the cool morning; the midday sun on open water is tiring. Carry water, a hat and sun protection.
  • Do not under-dressThis is a living, traditional temple; avoid shorts and sleeveless tops, and you will be welcome.
