Introduction

Kasauni is one of the famous tourist places in North India situated in close proximity to the Himalayan ranges. It is located 1890m. above the sea level in Bageshware district in the state of Uttarakhand. Termed as “Switzerland of India” by Mahatma Gandhi, the hill station is a scenic beauty near to another famous hill station Almora. Blessed with incessant natural splendour, Kasauni is a wonderful destination offering picturesque and panoramic view of 350 km. long Himalayan ranges with some of the major peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Panchchuli. Simply walking around the village can offer the visitors incredible magnificence besides exquisite landscapes.

Kasauni is a small village inhabited by only around 300 people. Options for eating out at Kasauni are limited. However both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food is available in the restaurants attached to the hotels. Local eateries called dhabas are also available but for tourist information, it is pertinent to know that they offer vegetarian food mainly. You can enjoy local fresh fruits like cherries.

Shopping

Shopping in Kasauni is mostly confined to warm apparel. Visitors may shop on the Mall Road for warm hand knitted caps and shawls as well as quilts, bags, pullovers, and gloves that are manufactured by girls at Sarla Ashram. That is not all about shopping in Kausani and there are some great eatables and divergent tea varieties to taste. Some of the best tea stores located just outside the tea factory are Anand & Sons tea stores and Puran Singh tea stores. Delicious Kumaoni jams, pickles, and chutneys are also amongst some good options to buy.

Nearest railway station to Kasauni is Kathgodam which is about 132 km. from the hill station. Nearest airport is Naini Saini in Pithoragarh about 179 km. from Kasauni but the major international airport nearest to Kasauni is Delhi (408 km.). Kasauni is well connected by state owned bus services from Almora, Ranikhet, Nainital, and Pittoragarh and by tourist bus services from Delhi. Both bus and taxi services are also available from Kathgodam and Pithoragarh for visitors arriving by train or air. Travelling around Kasauni is easy as it is one of the smallest towns. Several modes of internal transports are available including taxis and tongas (horse carts). Best way of enjoying the beauty of the hill station is by moving around on foot since most of the places of interests are located in close proximity to each other. One can cover all the places a day walking on foot. However horse drawn tongas can be used for family travel and sightseeing in Kasauni. Travellers can move by bus, but they are few in number, crowded and not well maintained.
