Bhindawas Lake was constructed to store the water escaping from the Jawaharlal Nehru Canal and today it is a popular site of Bhindawas Bird Sanctuary. This manmade wetland greets hundreds of native and migratory birds from all over the world. Adorned with greenery and natural beauty, the lake is a must-visit for bird-watchers. Some of the most commonly spotted birds at the sanctuary include black francolin, comb duck, Eurasian pigeon, red vented bulbul, ruddy shelduck, pied cuckoo, white throated kingfisher, rose-ringed parakeet, crested lark, purple swamphen, jungle babbler and many others. One may also come across blue bull antelope, jackal and jungle cat here. Climb the watchtowers to have magnificent views of the lake covered with flocks of birds. The 12 km. long embankment can be travelled in vehicle to take a full circle of the lake.
A famous birth-watching destination, Kalesar National Park and Sanctuary is one of the excellent spots for bird lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. Habitat to the red jungle fowl, the national park and sanctuary is named after the Kalesar (Shiva) Temple positioned in the foot hills of Shiwalik ranges. Wildlife buffs can enjoy the sights of Sambhar, Chital, Goral, Barking Deer and Nilgai (Blue bull) etc. Rich in flora and fauna, Kalesar National Park and Sanctuary have Khair forest, dense Sal forest and spells of grasslands. The sanctuary houses many endangered animals like 19 Panthers, Monitor Lizard, about 16 male and female leopards, and King Cobra. Occasional views of tigers and elephants in the park amuse visitors to the park. Kalesar Forest is probably the only one in Haryana with a natural ‘sal’ tree belt. The main attraction of the park is its 100-year-old colonial dark bungalow that offers a stunning view of the Yamuna River.
Introduction Established as a bird reserve and a bird sanctuary in 1972, Sultanpur Lake and its surrounding area were declared a national park in 1989. A paradise for the bird-lovers and a famous picnic spot for the people from the National Capital Region, Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary and National Park attract scores of migratory birds every year during winters. Visit the park during the season and you will come across the likes of Siberian crane, northern pintail, common teal, spotted redshank, spot-billed pelican, Eurasian wigeon, long-billed pipit and many other winged guests that travel thousands of miles to reach this wetland. The resident birds like little cormorant, common hoopoe, white-throated kingfisher, red-vented bulbul, great egret, rose-ringed parakeet, laughing dove, magpie robin and many others add to the place’s amazing avian population. Animals like nilgai, wild cat, sambar, wild dog and blackbuck can also be spotted here. The park also boasts of attractions like a museum, a library and an interpretation centre, offering great information about various birds. It is fun to explore the park on foot. Watch towers across the park facilitate wonderful bird watching experience. Lush green flora enhances the beauty of the place, leaving the visitors completely delighted.
