Coimbatore is your start point. It sits at the foot of the Western Ghats. It is the main entry for the Nilgiris. From here you drive about 87 km up to Ooty. The road climbs through jungle and hairpin bends. Once you are up, Ooty, Mudumalai and Coonoor sit close together. So this is not a trip of long drives. You climb once into the hills. Then you see the sights over three easy days.
The drive up from Coimbatore
Your trip starts at Coimbatore airport or railway station. From there you drive up to Ooty, about 87 km away. The road winds through jungle and many hairpin bends. On the way you may stop at Avalanche Lake and Emerald Lake. You may also stop at Avalanche Hill. You pass old palaces and colonial buildings too. Take the climb slowly and enjoy the cool air.
Ooty, the Queen of the Nilgiris
Ooty is the Queen of the Nilgiris. Its Government Botanical Gardens are the most loved sight. Entry is about INR 30 for an adult and about INR 15 for a child. A camera costs about INR 30 for a still and about INR 100 for video. The Government Rose Garden is close by. Entry there is about INR 30. A camera there costs about INR 30 for a still and about INR 75 for video. Ooty Lake sits in the town centre. You can boat at the Ooty Boat House. Entry is about INR 10 and boating is about INR 160 to 450. A camera costs about INR 30 for a still and about INR 125 for video. The town market is good for Nilgiri cheese, tea, chocolate, honey, spices and herbal oils. Please reconfirm all fees at the gate, as they change.
Doddabetta, tea and Mudumalai wildlife
Doddabetta is the highest peak in the Nilgiris. It stands at about 8,650 feet. The Telescope House there costs about INR 10. Come early, as mist can close the view by late morning. Next you visit the Ooty Tea Factory. It opens about 9 am to 5:30 pm. Entry is about INR 10 for the factory and about INR 10 for the museum. You also see the Nilgiri tea gardens on the slopes. Then you drive to Mudumalai National Park. It opens about 7 to 9 am and about 3 to 6 pm. Entry is about INR 15. A camera is about INR 25 for a still and about INR 150 for video. A jeep safari costs about INR 135 per person. You may see tigers, elephants, leopards, gaur and many birds.
Pykara lake and falls
On the way back you reach Pykara. You see Pykara Falls among the hills. You also reach Pykara Lake. You can boat here at the Pykara Boat House. Boating costs about INR 175. Please reconfirm the fee on the day.
Coonoor and its viewpoints
On your last day you drive to Coonoor, about 20 km from Ooty. Coonoor sits lower than Ooty. It is the quieter, greener town. First you see Sim's Park. It opens about 9 am to 6:30 pm and entry is about INR 30. Then you reach Lamb's Rock. It looks over coffee and tea estates. Next you reach Dolphin's Nose. It looks over hills, valleys and waterfalls. Watch for monkeys at the viewpoints. Hold your children's hands on the rocky edges.
The free Nilgiris e-pass and green tax
Every non-local tourist vehicle now needs a free Nilgiris e-pass. You apply for it online before you drive up. Use the official Tamil Nadu portal, epass.tnega.org. You show it before the checkpost. A court order makes this a year-round rule. Staff also collect a small green tax in cash at the checkpost. For a car this is about INR 30. So carry small notes. Please reconfirm the current rule on the official portal before you travel.
The toy train, an optional add on
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is the famous toy train. It has UNESCO World Heritage status. It climbs from Mettupalayam through Coonoor up to Ooty. This tour does not include the toy train. You can add it on your own as an option. The railway reserves every seat and seats are scarce. So book on IRCTC as soon as the 60 day window opens. The Coonoor to Ooty leg is the prettiest stretch.
Best time to visit and the monsoon
The good window is broadly October to June. October to February is the clearest for views. The nights are cold then. April to June is the warm summer with the biggest crowds. The monsoon runs about June to September. It brings mist, rain and slippery roads. So drive slowly and keep your plans open.

The Nilgiris are gentle if you take a little care. Pack warm layers for the cold nights. Choose the flat sights like Ooty Lake and the gardens. The good news is simple. All three hill towns sit close together above one airport. Coimbatore is your start. Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri are within about 20 to 33 km of each other. So you can see a lot without long drives once you are up.

Kotagiri: the quietest hill town, the shola forest, and where the story began
Kotagiri is the quietest of the three Nilgiri hill stations. It is the oldest in British record, at about 1,793 metres. It is a working hill town, not a resort strip. First, the truth that trips people up: the toy train does not reach Kotagiri.

The Queen of the Nilgiris
The little train that climbs by gripping the mountain
Tooth by tooth up the rack rail, through tea and shola forest, into the clouds.
The most loved memory of a Nilgiri trip is often a railway line. This tour does not include it, but you can add it yourself. Workers finished the Nilgiri Mountain Railway up to Udhagamandalam in 1908. It is India's only rack railway. On the steepest lower stretch from Mettupalayam up to Coonoor, an ordinary train cannot grip the slope. So a toothed centre rail and a cogwheel under the engine let it haul itself up. It climbs tooth by tooth, through tunnels and over old stone bridges. For this feat, UNESCO added it in 2005 to the World Heritage listing of the Mountain Railways of India. Ride the steam leg into Coonoor on a clear morning. Go slowly and watch the tea slopes and the valleys open up. Then you see why so many people add one morning on this train to their Nilgiri trip from Coimbatore. The hills are lovely. But the climb up to them is the thing you remember.
