Baidyanath Dham Deoghar: what you need in 2026

• Your ordinary darshan of Baidyanath is free and open to all.
• Outside the Shravan rush you reach the temple, join the queue, and offer water on the Jyotirlinga in the usual way.
• There is a paid quick darshan arrangement at the temple at busy times, handled at the temple itself.

In the month of Shravan, usually July to August, huge crowds of kanwariyas walk from Sultanganj in Bihar. They carry Ganga water for about one hundred kilometres, to pour on Baidyanath. It is one of the largest gatherings in India, a river of saffron on the roads. In this season the queues last many hours and the town is packed. The government sets up long managed lines, holding points, and an online sign up to handle the flow. If you come in Shravan, plan for a long, slow, joyful wait, and register on the government site first.

For the Shravani Mela the government offers an online sign up on the official Deoghar district site, and in some years a queue pass or a quick darshan slot. You register with your details, get your slot or pass, and follow the managed route. This is a government arrangement, so trust only the government site, and treat any other site asking for money as a private reseller. The temple opens very early in the morning for the kanwar jal offering and stays open through the day into the night, with a break for the temple dressing and the aartis, and it runs almost round the clock in the Shravan rush. The exact hours change with the season and the Mela, and the administration sets them, so check the official site before you go, above all in Shravan.

You can visit all year, and outside Shravan the darshan is much calmer, above all on ordinary weekdays. The great season is Shravan, July to August, and Maha Shivratri is also grand and busy. The cooler months from about October to February are pleasant for the trip. If you come in Shravan, expect enormous crowds and register first; for a quiet darshan, pick a weekday outside the festival months.

Deoghar is in Jharkhand, well linked to Bihar and Bengal. It has the Deoghar airport. The nearest big railway station is Jasidih, about seven kilometres from the temple, with a branch line to Deoghar town. You reach the temple by road within Deoghar. Many pilgrims come from Patna, Kolkata or Ranchi, and pair Baidyanath with Basukinath nearby.

Many pilgrims complete Baidyanath with a visit to the Basukinath temple, about forty three kilometres away. The kanwariyas often carry their water to both, the dak bora pilgrims running the whole way. If you have time, add Basukinath to your trip, above all in Shravan, when the two temples are linked in the pilgrimage. Give yourself an extra half day for it.

Carry a photo identity and a little cash for offerings and the cloakroom. Carry water and a hat, because the queues are long and hot in Shravan, and easy clothes you do not mind getting wet with the holy water. Wear simple footwear you leave at the stands. Keep your valuables light and safe, because the crowds are huge in the festival season.
