Omkareshwar Darshan: what you need in 2026

On the official site you book poojas in your name at the temple, such as the abhishekam and the rudrabhishek. You pay online and keep the confirmation, then present it at the temple on the day. The same site carries a live darshan you can watch from home, and a check for ticket availability. This is the safe way to arrange a pooja, rather than paying a stranger.

The temple sits on Mandhata island in the Narmada, reached by a bridge or a short boat ride from the town, and the setting on the holy river is part of its magic. You can do the parikrama, a walk of about seven kilometres around Mandhata island, and visit the Mamleshwar temple on the mainland, which some hold to be the true Jyotirlinga pair. Give yourself time for the river, the boats and the walk, not only the darshan.

The temple opens very early, before dawn, for the morning aarti, and stays open through the day into the evening, with the aartis and poojas at set times. The bridge and the queue can be slow on busy days. The exact hours can shift, and the temple sets them, so check the official site before you go, and reach early for the dawn aarti.

You can visit all year, though the summer is hot, so the cooler months from about October to February are pleasant, and the monsoon fills the Narmada grandly. Mondays, Maha Shivratri and the month of Shravan are the holiest and busiest times. Kartik Purnima and the Narmada festivals are lovely on the river. If you visit at a peak, book your fast darshan far ahead and reach early.

Omkareshwar is about 77 kilometres from Indore in Madhya Pradesh. The nearest airport and major railway are at Indore, with a small station at Omkareshwar Road nearby. You reach the town by road, then cross to the island by bridge or boat. Many pilgrims pair Omkareshwar with Mahakaleshwar at Ujjain, about 130 kilometres away, to see two of the twelve Jyotirlingas on one trip.

Carry your booking, a photo identity, and a little cash for the boat, offerings and the cloakroom. Carry water and a hat for the island walk, and easy shoes for the parikrama. Dress modestly, leave your phone and shoes at the stands as directed, and keep your belongings safe in the crowd on festival days.
