Bull Temple, better known as Dodda Basavana Gudi in the regional language, is dedicated to Nandi Bull, which according to Hindu mythology is Lord Shiva’s mount. The chief attraction of the place is a 15 ft. high and 20 ft. long granite monolithic idol of Nandi, counted among the largest in the world. According to the popular legend, the temple was built to pacify a violent bull that would destroy the groundnut crops in the region. The bull stopped its damage spree after the temple was built. Since then, a traditional festival called groundnut festival is celebrated during the months of November-December at the temple. Bull Temple is home to a gigantic idol of Lord Ganesha. The temple is also famous for its typical Vijayanagara architecture with temple tower as the key highlight.
ISKCON Bangalore, Sri Jagannath Mandir Seshadripuram temple is a very popular temple dedicated to Hindu deities Lord Krishna and Radha. The huge and magnificent complex of this temple makes it one of the largest ISKCON temples in the world. Festivals that are related to the avatars of Lord Vishnu or Vedic culture are celebrated here with joy. During this time, the temple is decorated with lights and flowers which add beauty to the serene environment of the temple. This temple mainly promotes the Vedic culture and spiritual learning. There is a free distribution of prasadam to all the visitors during the temple hours. This temple also provides free food to all those who wish to have it. The members of ISKCON temple are involved in social service called Akshaya Patra Foundation which is the partnership operation of providing mid- day meals to children in government schools across India.
A must-visit for every enthusiastic wildlife explorer, Bannerghatta National Park accommodates wild creatures like tigers, panthers, lions, white tiger, bison, sloth bear, jackal and leopard and birds like quails, partridges, jungle fowls, ibis, storks, parakeets, minivet and drongo. Apart from the main zoo, there are other attractions like a butterfly park, a museum and an auditorium featuring wildlife film show. Among the most popular activities in the park are the safari trips to explore tigers, lions, herbivorous animals and bear. Visitors can also enjoy the recreational activities like boating (which costs INR 50 per head or INR 250 for full boat hire). Long and short treks and nature walking trips can also be enjoyed by paying additional money. There are facilities like restrooms and restaurants in the park. Warnings Plastic and polythene is strictly banned inside the park.
Lalbagh Botanical garden houses the largest collection of tropical plants in the country. It is well known for the annual flower show conducted in its glass house, which is modeled on London's Crystal Palace. Originally commissioned by the Mysore ruler, Hyder Ali, Lalbagh is one of the must see attractions in the city. It has over 1000 different types of plants including a rare collection of plants that were sourced from various countries including Persia, France and Afghanistan. Lal Bagh is set in 240 acres around one of the towers built by Kempa Gowda, the founder of the city. The beautifully landscaped garden with various features like lawns, lotus pools and fountains also has one of the oldest rock formations that are 3000 million years old. The design of Lalbagh was drawn from the famous Mughal gardens that once stood at Sira at Tumkur District in Karnataka. The garden is not just a favourite spot for morning joggers and health freaks but also among families that throng the garden on weekends and holidays.
Cubbon Park, also known as Sri Jayachamarajendra Park, confirms Bangalore’s status as the ‘Garden City’. Well-known for its rich flora and numerous iconic buildings and monuments, the park boasts of creative landscapes and well-maintained roads and avenues. Apart from the local residents who visit the park for walking, jogging and relaxing, huge flocks of tourists regularly throng the park to admire its abundant beauty. Thousands of plants and trees belonging to nearly 100 species adorn the park area. Some popular ones include araucaria, bamboo, artocarpus, millettia, silver oak, schinus molle and delonix. Lotus Pond and innumerable flower beds add beautiful colours to the park area. Among the most notable historical buildings in the park, Attara Kacheri (High Court), Sheshadri Iyer Memorial Hall, Indira Priyadarshini’s Children Library, Venkatappa Art Gallery, octagonal Bandstand and Government Aquarium are extremely worth visiting. Jawahar Bal Bhawan amusement park (with toy train ride) and State Archaeological Museum (with collections of coins, paintings, sculptures and excavated items) are other attraction you must visit. Statues of eminent personalities like Queen Victoria and King Edward are the added attractions. Dancing Musical Fountain is one of the recently added attractions. Two wonderful daily shows held here from 07:00 p.m.-07:30 p.m. and 08:00 p.m.-08:30 p.m. (excluding Mondays and second Tuesdays) can leave you mesmerized. The park area restricts motor vehicles between 05:00 a.m. and 08:00 a.m.
If you get an impression of Windsor Castle in Bangalore, you are standing in font of Bangalore Palace. Built in Tudor architecture style, the palace is a magnificent construction of wood and it boasts of mesmerizing paintings, carvings and adornments. The use of blue ceramics and granite add worth to the palace’s splendour. Apart from the entry fee, one needs to pay additional costs, ranging from INR 10-18, for various rides.
