01Season

When to visit Coimbatore

Coimbatore has a comfortable climate for much of the year, cooled by the Western Ghats breeze, and is best about October to March. The thing to plan is the timings at Isha and the Adiyogi.

  • October to March: pleasantThe most comfortable season, cool and clear, ideal for Isha, the temples and a Nilgiri trip. Coimbatore is milder than most of the southern plains thanks to the Ghats breeze.
  • Time the Adiyogi and DhyanalingaThe Adiyogi is open about 6 am to 8 pm (later on full-moon and new-moon nights), the weekend light show runs in the evening, and the Dhyanalinga offering is twice a day. Plan your Isha visit around these.
  • Siruvani after the monsoonThe Siruvani waterfalls are at their best just after the monsoon, when they are in full flow; the forest gate is open only through the day. April to June is hotter, though still moderate.
Isha and the Adiyogi are free, but timed

There is no entry fee at the Isha Yoga Center or the Adiyogi, but the Adiyogi, the weekend light show and the Dhyanalinga offering all have set hours, and a modest dress code applies. Plan around them. The signature section explains the visit.

02Air, rail and road

How to reach Coimbatore

Coimbatore has its own international airport and is a major rail hub, which makes it the easiest gateway to Isha, the Nilgiris and the Western Ghats.

  • By air, including from the GulfCoimbatore International Airport has direct flights from the Gulf and Southeast Asia as well as the Indian metros. From the airport, Isha is about an hour's drive, and the Nilgiri foothills are close.
  • By trainCoimbatore Junction is a major railway hub, well connected to Chennai, Bengaluru and across the south. It is also the start of the journey up to the Nilgiri Mountain Railway at Mettupalayam.
  • By road, and on to the NilgirisCoimbatore is about 500 km from Chennai and 360 km from Bengaluru. From here it is a short drive to Mettupalayam for the toy train, or up the ghat road to Ooty and Coonoor.
From the US, UK and Europe

Fly into Chennai or Bengaluru and connect, or via a Gulf hub directly into Coimbatore. It is the gateway to Isha, the Adiyogi and the Nilgiris.

From the Gulf and Southeast Asia

Coimbatore has frequent direct flights from the Gulf and Southeast Asia, the home airport for much of the Kongu and Tamil diaspora, and the easiest way to Isha and the hills.

Within India

Direct flights and a major rail junction connect Coimbatore to Chennai, Bengaluru and across the south; the Nilgiri toy train and the ghat road start from here.

03Isha, the temple and the falls

The Adiyogi, Marudhamalai and Siruvani

Coimbatore's draws are the Isha Yoga Center and its Adiyogi, the Murugan hill temple, and the Western Ghats waterfalls, all within easy reach of the city.

  • The Isha Yoga Center and AdiyogiAbout 30 km from the city at the foot of the Velliangiri Mountains, with the 112-foot Adiyogi Shiva statue and the Dhyanalinga. Entry is free; the Adiyogi is open about 6 am to 8 pm, with a weekend evening light show and a modest dress code.
  • Marudhamalai templeThe Murugan hill temple about 14 km from the city, open about 6 am to 1 pm and again in the afternoon to evening (commonly about 4 pm to 8 pm, hours vary so check locally), reached by steps or a winch up the hill, with a fine view over Coimbatore.
  • Siruvani waterfallsAbout 35 km west in the Western Ghats, famous for the falls and the exceptionally sweet Siruvani water. The forest gate is open about 10 am to 5 pm, and the falls are at their best just after the monsoon.
Dress and timing for Isha

At the Isha Yoga Center, dress modestly and keep the calm; the Adiyogi, the light show and the Dhyanalinga offering have set hours, so plan your visit around them. The next section is the Isha experience and the Nilgiri gateway in full.

04Isha and the gateway

The Adiyogi, the Dhyanalinga, and the road to the Nilgiris

Coimbatore's two great offerings are the Isha Yoga Center with its Adiyogi and Dhyanalinga, and its role as the gateway to the Nilgiri hills and the UNESCO toy train.

  • The 112-foot AdiyogiThe vast Adiyogi Shiva statue, the face of the yogi, is free to visit and open about 6 am to 8 pm. Come in the cool of the morning, or stay for the weekend evening light-and-sound show that brings the statue alive.
  • The DhyanalingaA powerful, quiet meditative space open to all, with an offering twice a day (around midday and around 6 pm). Sit a while in the silence; it is the heart of an Isha visit, and the calm contrast to the grand Adiyogi.
  • Take the Nilgiri toy trainFrom Mettupalayam, about 35 km away, the UNESCO Nilgiri Mountain Railway climbs through forest and tea to Coonoor and Ooty, one of India's great rail journeys. Book ahead, as seats are limited and popular.
  • Use Coimbatore as your baseWith the international airport, the rail hub and the short hops to Isha, the temples and the Nilgiris, Coimbatore is the natural base for the whole region. We arrange the car, the Isha timing and the toy-train booking.
05Hills, water and cloth

The hills, the sweet water and the cotton city

Around Isha and the city, Coimbatore offers the Western Ghats, the famous Siruvani water, and the textile heritage of the cotton city.

  • Up to Ooty and CoonoorTake the toy train or drive up the ghat to the Nilgiri hill stations, a cool, green escape of tea gardens and viewpoints. Coimbatore is the gateway, so this is the natural add-on.
  • Siruvani for the water and the fallsThe Siruvani water is famously among the sweetest in the world; the falls in the forest, best after the monsoon, are a pretty half-day (the gate is open through the day only).
  • Shop the cotton cityCoimbatore's textile and cotton markets are a good place for cottons, towels and home linen at honest prices, a nod to the city's Manchester-of-the-South heritage.
  • Eat Kongu foodThe Kongu region's hearty vegetarian and non-vegetarian food is a treat; the city's well-known meals halls and tiffin places are excellent. Eat at busy, clean places and drink bottled or filtered water.
06Common mistakes

Mistakes to avoid in Coimbatore

Coimbatore is easy and friendly, but a little planning makes the Isha visit and the hills smoother.

  • Do not arrive at Isha out of hours or under-dressedThe Adiyogi, the light show and the Dhyanalinga offering have set times, and a modest dress code applies. Check the timings and dress for it, especially for the weekend evening show.
  • Do not leave the toy train to chanceThe Nilgiri Mountain Railway is hugely popular and seats are limited; book well ahead, or you may miss it. Drive up the ghat as a fallback.
  • Do not expect a sightseeing townCoimbatore is a working city; come for Isha, the temples and the hills rather than city sights, and base yourself here for the region.
  • Do not turn up at Siruvani lateThe forest gate closes in the afternoon (about 5 pm), so go in the morning, and check it is open in the dry months when the falls can be thin.
