Asia’s largest artificial lake at the time of its construction in the 17th century, Jaisamand Lake near Udaipur now ranks at second position. Also called Bhebar Lake, it resulted from the construction of a dam over River Gomati by Maharana Jai Singh. Enclosed within rugged hills, the lake spread over 36 sq. km. of area and houses numerous islands. Apart from its unbeatable beauty and serene atmosphere, the lake is popular for outstanding royal structures built along its periphery.

A summer palace constructed for Udaipur Queens and a pavilion supported by 12 beautifully carved pillars are among the noteworthy attractions. Marble elephants and exquisitely carved royal cenotaphs overlooking the lake add to its glory. A temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in the close vicinity is visited by many tourists. You can also enjoy boating on the calm waters of this pretty lake.

Jaisamand Sanctuary adjoining the lake is a treat for the wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers. Deer, wild boars, panthers, leopards and crocodiles and a wide variety of birds can be spotted here. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Jaisamand Lake Resort, a luxurious accommodation known across the world.
