How to Reach from Ahmedabad:
- By Air: There are no direct flights from Ahmedabad to Srinagar. You may choose to fly from Ahmedabad to Delhi to Srinagar (takes 7-10 hr., including the airport waiting time; costs INR 7,000-11,000). You may also prefer flying via Mumbai.
- By Rail: You may either board a direct train to Jammu (takes 27-31 hr.; costs around INR 1500-2,200) or to Udhampur (takes around 33 hr.; costs around INR 2,000). From Jammu or Udhampur, you can travel by road, either in state transport buses (average time and cost: 11 hr. and INR 600) or taxis (average time and cost: 6 hr. and INR 6,000).
- By Road: The distance between two cities in approximately 1,700 km. By taxi or private car, you can take the route along NH 54 via Abu Road, Bathinda, Faridkot, Amritsar and Gurdaspur or the route along NH 58 via Udaipur, Ajmer, Ludhiana and Jalandhar to finally reach Pathankot. From Pathankot, you would take NH 44 to reach Srinagar via Jammu. State transport bus (takes about 40-42 hr and costs between INR 1,200-1,600) from Ahmedabad to New Delhi to Srinagar is another mode. The route from Jammu to Srinagar faces closures during heavy snowfall and also due to landslides and floods; so plan a journey through latest news.
Local Transport Options:
If you have a tight budget, prefer visiting Gulmarg and Pahalgam from Srinagar by state transport buses (cost would be under INR 500). However, taxis (may cost up to INR 4,000 per day) are more convenient options. For local transportation within Srinagar, you should prefer auto-rickshaws. Please note that taxis from Srinagar or private cars from Ahmedabad might not be allowed for local sightseeing in Gulmarg and Pahalgam. There, you would need to hire local taxis (may cost INR 1,800-2000 per day). Ponies are also available at these places and also to visit Betaab Valley and other places. Don’t forget to bargain with pony owners who may demand INR 3,000-4,000 but can easily be brought down to INR 1,000-1,500.

What to Eat?
Ahdoos in Srinagar and Volga in Pahalgam are among the top choices to enjoy the feast of authentic Kashmiri cuisines, including the 36-course Wazwan and other non-veg preparations like goshtaba, tabakmaaz, roganjosh, matschgand and aab gosht. Krishna Vaishno Dhaba in Srinagar and many other vegetarian-friendly restaurants offer vegetarian dishes like aaloo dum, lyodur tschaman (cottage cheese in creamy gravy), modur pulav (flavoured with saffron) and nadur churma (made of lotus stems).
