Srisailam Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga Yatra: The Andhra Sector of Your 12-Jyotirlinga Sankalp, Ex-Hyderabad

You want darshan of Mallikarjuna Swamy at Srisailam. The shrine sits high in the Nallamala hills of Andhra Pradesh, above the Krishna river. Getting there is not hard, but the road has its own rules. This page prepares you for all of it.

What Srisailam means to you

Srisailam is one of the oldest holy hills of the south. The main deity is Mallikarjuna Swamy, a form of Lord Shiva. Tradition says the linga was worshipped with jasmine flowers, called mallika in Telugu, and this gave the shrine its name.

Both a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha

Srisailam is a Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. Tradition lists Mallikarjuna as the second of the twelve. In the very same temple complex stands the shrine of Bhramaramba Devi, the Goddess. Srisailam is counted among the eighteen Maha Shakti Peethas, where a part of Sati Devi is said to have fallen. So at Srisailam you have darshan of both Shiva and Shakti in one place. This pairing in one setting is very rare.

The temple, its gopurams and old stones

Inscriptions of the Satavahana dynasty from about the 2nd century already mention this shrine. The Reddy rulers of the 12th and 13th centuries built the Veera Siro Mandapam and the steps down to the river. King Harihara of the Vijayanagara empire added much of what you see today. The complex covers about two hectares and has four tall gopurams. Inside you can see the Mukha Mandapa, the Sahasra Linga with a thousand small lingas, and five lingas linked in tradition to the Pandavas.

Patala Ganga and the steps to the Krishna

Below the temple flows the Krishna river. This spot is called Patala Ganga. Pilgrims go down for a holy dip, then carry the sacred water up for abhishekam. There is a long stone stairway, about 852 steps. A ropeway also runs in the daytime, so you do not have to walk the steps. Take the ropeway if your knees are weak or the sun is high.

Sikharam, the far view

High above the town sits Sikharam, with a small Shiva shrine and a wide view over the Nallamala hills. Tradition holds that seeing the Srisailam temple peak from Sikharam brings a special blessing. Go in the early morning or late afternoon.

Akkamahadevi caves by boat

From Patala Ganga you can take a boat on the Krishna to the Akkamahadevi caves, named after the 12th-century Kannada poet-saint of the Shiva bhakti path. Inside is a natural Shiva linga. Timings depend on the water level and weather, so confirm the boat service on the day. Carry a torch, as the cave is dark.

The Srisailam dam and the Nallamala forest

The Srisailam dam holds back the Krishna in a deep gorge. It stands about 143 metres tall and was finished in 1980. All around is the Nallamala forest. Srisailam sits inside the Nagarjunasagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve, the largest tiger reserve in India, spread over about 3,728 square kilometres. So the green hills you drive through are a real tiger home.

The ghat road truth you must know

The road from Hyderabad to Srisailam passes through the Nallamala forest. Because this is a tiger reserve, the forest gates close to vehicles at night. Two travel sources give the closing as about 9 pm to about 6 am. So you must clear the forest stretch in daylight. Plan to reach the checkposts, Mannanur on the Telangana side and Dornala on the Andhra side, well before the night gate. Speed limits inside are low, about 30 to 40 km per hour. Mobile signal is weak, so download your map before you enter.

Darshan, sparsha darshan and seva booking

Srisailam offers a general darshan line and paid quicker darshan tickets. It is also known for its Sparsha Darshan, where devotees may touch the Shiva linga, subject to the day's rules. Book your darshan slot, seva, and any Devasthanam room online in advance through the official Srisailam Devasthanam portal at srisailadevasthanam.org, or the temple booking site at srisailamonline.com. Dress code and what is not allowed

Dress simply and modestly. Many pilgrims wear a dhoti or a saree for special sevas and abhishekam. Leather belts, wallets, and bags are usually not allowed near the sanctum. Phones and cameras are often not permitted inside, so use the cloak counter or a locker.

For your elders and wheelchair users

Your basic darshan of Mallikarjuna Swamy is on fairly level ground and is manageable for elders. The 852 steps to Patala Ganga are steep, so let your elders take the ropeway or stay at the temple. The Akkamahadevi cave trip needs a boat and a rocky walk, so skip it if walking is hard.

Best time and honest seasonality

The best months are October to March, when the weather is cool. April to June is very hot in these hills. The monsoon from July to September brings heavy rain, and the forest road can be slippery. Maha Shivaratri, in February or March, is the biggest festival and draws huge crowds. Whatever month you pick, remember the night gate in the forest and plan a daylight drive.

Srisailam fits well as a two or three day trip out of Hyderabad, which has good flight links from abroad. There is no special foreign quota at this temple.
