The holy cave where Lord Shiva preached the secrets of immortality to his consort Goddess Parvati, Amarnath is one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimage sites. Located about 4,000 m. above sea level, the cave is accessible by thrilling trekking routes from Chandanwari (about 30 km. long) and Baltal (about 14 km. long) passing through mesmerizing snow-covered peaks and valleys.

Every year, an ice stalagmite in the form of Shiva Lingam formed inside the cave for a short time period during summers is worshipped by the devout pilgrims. Many religiously significant places like Pahalgam, Chandanwari, Lake Sheshnag and Panjtarni can be visited on the route to the holy cave. Camps, tents and food are available at various places of halt. Trek can be covered on foot or on ponies.

Children below 13 and adults above 75 are not permitted. Registration for the pilgrimage is a must. Physical fitness certificate is a must. Pilgrimage involves extremely strenuous trekking under rough weather conditions. Don’t forget to carry heavy woollens, trekking shoes, torch, raingear, eatables, bottled water and dry fruits. Follow pilgrimage instructions and be disciplined. Non-vegetarian food and alcohol are strictly prohibited.

Road: One can reach the base camps at Chandanwari and Baltal from where the distance to the holy cave is covered by trekking. Ponies and palanquins are also available for those who can’t trek.

Railway: Jammu Railway Station (about 285 km. from Pahalgam and about 386 km. from Baltal) is the nearest railhead one can use to access Amarnath Temple. Taxis, cabs and buses are available for the road journey from the railway station.

Airway: The closest airport is Srinagar International Airport which is about 100 km. from Pahalgam and about 105 km. from Baltal. It is advised to book the air tickets in advance during the pilgrimage season.
