Popularly known as Laxmi Narayan Temple, Birla Temple is counted among the must-visit tourist places of New Delhi. Dedicated to Lord Narayan (Lord Vishnu) and Goddess Laxmi, the temple was constructed in 1930s and was inaugurated by Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi. Apart from the main shrine, there are small temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Krishna, Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, Goddess Durga and Lord Buddha.
Built in Nagara temple architectural style, the temple is admirable for its frescos, paintings and carvings. Marble and kota stone brought from Rajasthan and other neighbouring locations add to the temple’s remarkable construction. There are many fountains and a well-maintained garden area inside the temple complex.
One must visit the temple during festivals like Diwali and Janmashthmi to watch it at full glory. The temple also welcomes international scholars who wish to gain knowledge about Hinduism.
Connectivites
Road:
Delhi has major road connectivity with all major North India cities through Inter State Bus Terminus. One can use local transport buses, metro rail, taxis, cabs and auto-rickshaws to reach the temple from the main bus terminus. It is worth mentioning that roads in Delhi often get crowded and traffic jams are quite frequent.
Railway:
Delhi is well connected by railway to all parts of India. Frequent trains connect various railway stations within the city with top cities across India. New Delhi Railway Station (about 3 km. away) and Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station (about 10 km. away) are the closest railheads to the temple.
Airway:
Delhi has both domestic and international flight connectivity from across the world viz. Indira Gandhi International Airport (which is about 14 km. away from the temple). From airport, one can easily hire taxis and cabs to reach the temple complex.
