Designated as the holiest of all shrines in the state of Jammu & Kashmir, Hazratbal definitely holds a special religious significance for the Muslims as well as for the followers of other religions. With its beautiful domed structure, this white marble wonder stands silently witnessing the pristine beauty of Dal Lake. Moi-e-Muqqadas is the sacred relic, a hair of Prophet Muhammad’s beard, which makes the mosque a holy destination. Hundreds of thousands of ardent believers in the Almighty throng the place with the keen desire to have a glimpse of the relic which is displayed to the public on special occasions.

According to the popular legend, the relic was brought to India by one of Muhammad’s descendants whose son, failing to take proper care of the sacred relic, sold it to a Kashmiri merchant. Though, the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb tried to forcefully acquire it, the relic was finally brought to Srinagar and was preserved at Hazratbal which was earlier a prayer house and then converted into the mosque.

Inside the holy shrine, one can feel connected directly to the God. Such serene and pleasant atmosphere is rare to experience in the world. A courtyard leads to the bank of Dal Lake, where the followers and visitors can be seen taking dip in the water.
