An old but one of the best preserved forts in India, Palakkad Fort flaunts historical charm and unique grandeur. Also known as Tipu’s Fort, it was built in the 18th century by the ruler of Mysore Hyder Ali and later fell into the hands of the British. Today, it boasts of strong walls and bastions and stands as a landmark of the region.
Among the highlights of the fort is its Kota Maidanam which earlier serves as the royal stable for elephants and horses. The pillared hall within the premises hosts a small museum which exhibits stone carvings and sculptures from the bygone era. An open-air auditorium called Rappadi and a children’s park called Vatika are among other attractions at the fort.
One may also visit the Hanuman Temple inside the fort. Well-known for its invincible defence system, the fort is surrounded by water and luxuriant greenery. The town has many other attractions, including temples, heritage buildings, dams, parks and gardens, in its close vicinity.
