Carved in the basalt rocks of Western Ghats’ Satamala Range of Hills, Pitalkhora Caves have their history dating back to the 3rd century BC. Counted among the specimen of the earliest Buddhist sites, the caves were discovered by the British in the 19th century. Representing exquisite rock-cut architecture, the cluster consists of 14 Buddhist caves out of which, 4 represent chaityas (prayer halls) and 10 representing viharas (monasteries). The stupas at the chaityas are considered among the best across the country.

Among the most amazing highlights of the place are the enthralling paintings and inscriptions on the pillars. The statues and sculptures of nagas (snakes), door guardians and animals like elephants and horses are exceptionally remarkable. Miniature windows and sculptures of yakshas enhance the visual treat. A notable aspect of many caves is the drainage system which was constructed to prevent water from seeping inside.

The hike to the caves in itself is an outstanding experience. The caves overlook the ravines and gorges and have beautiful waterfalls all around. Avoid visiting the site during monsoons when the entire surface becomes slippery.

Road: From Aurangabad or Chalisgaon, you can board a bus to reach Bhamarwadi from where the caves are about 11 km. away. However, a taxi from each of these locations can help you reach the base from where caves can be accessed by climbing steep steps and crossing an iron bridge.

Railway: Chalisgaon Junction is about 36 km. away while Aurangabad Railway Station is about 77 km. away. Hiring taxis from these stations can help you reach the base point.

Airway: The closest airport is located at Aurangabad (about 84 km. away). The road trip from the airport to the base point can be best covered in a taxi.
